Please keep in mind that PHS after-school programs:

  • have a limited number of spaces

  • are selective (e.g., there is an application process or you have to receive faculty recommendation)

  • most clubs and programs will only meet virtually

  • a few clubs and programs will meet both in-person and virtually

The Reading Olympics Club is essentially a competitive book club. The purpose of the club is to unite students who enjoy reading for pleasure and discussing books with peers. A pre-chosen list of books, covering a wide variety of genres, serves as the basis for the club’s reading activities. Students will work in teams to prepare for a countywide competition with area high schools held in Delaware County in the spring. Club members choose meeting dates.

The Gryphon, Penncrest's Literary Magazine, is published once a year, in the spring. Throughout the academic year any student may submit stories, poems, essays, artwork and photography to be considered for publication by the Gryphon editorial staff, which is comprised of interested Penncrest students of all ages.

Penncrest High School became America’s First Public Fair Trade High School in 2011. We continues to host educational events as part of Penncrest’s commitment to promote the social, environmental and economic benefits associated with selling and using Fair Trade items and products.

Penncrest High School’s chapter of the National English Honor Society, Pi Lambda Sigma, carries with it a commitment to the mission of the founders of the Society: to promote mastery of written expression, encourage worthwhile reading, and foster fellowship among students who excel in English studies. Students accepted into the Society are to be congratulated, as the requirements are rigorous: an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher, as well as a sustained 90% or higher in English. After induction, students are expected to volunteer their time and talents to help further the mission of the Society.

Emanon (no name backwards) is Penncrest High School’s Theatre Club. Emanon performs three shows a year, seasonally. While we aways need actors, it takes many hands to out on a show. We are looking for people to join our team in all of the following areas: performing, tech (lights and sound) art direction, set building, costume/makeup, props and stage crew. Earn points throughout your Emanon career to be inducted into International Thespians Society (ITS). Emanon is YOUR place to bring your imagination and creativity to life and to be a part of an amazing team! We welcome you!

Mu Alpha Theta is the Math Honor Society for Penncrest High School. The organization promotes students to use their talents in mathematics to represent the school. Students who are selected to become inducted in the organization have many roles at the school. Math Honor Society students tutor underclassmen across the subject area of mathematics after school to help students better understand topics in their own courses. They participate in monthly math competitions to represent Penncrest's achievements in mathematics. They also host an event in March to celebrate Pi Day. Mathematical work that they have created can be displayed in the showcase in A-Wing.

The String Ensemble is a music ensemble that looks to develop the skills and qualities of string players at the high school. Members will have the opportunity to perform many pieces in several different musical genres. Community building, competitions, trips, and performances are important aspects of the ensemble. Our main goal is to provide a welcoming atmosphere for all string musicians and build relationships that go beyond the music stand.
The Chamber Ensemble follows the same description as String Ensemble. however, the Chamber Ensemble is an auditioned group that is open to only sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Members of the Chamber Ensemble will learn harder repertoire and be expected to learn and know harder technical demands on their instrument.

PHS Physics Olympics is an academic competition team focusing on physics applications. 9 local schools participate in the Physics Olympics Program.

History Day is a competition in which students that enjoy the art of the historian, historical research, and history in general can create a project to submit in the local history day competition. The Club turns into a History Day Team as ideas and projects are narrowed to those that will be submitted for competition in March. Global Scholars Program is a multidisciplinary program sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association.At Penncrest, it is a self-designed, work-at-your-own-pace program for globally-minded students. Penncrest students must take four years of the same World Language, earning a grade of B or better each year. They must also take 4 other global electives, earning grades of B or better. Students complete 20 hours of globally-focused community service, participate in globally-oriented extracurricular activities, and complete 8 international media and/or literature reviews over the course of their career at Penncrest.

The Junior Optimist Club provides students an opportunity to develop and participate in community service projects.

The purpose of this club is to expose students to global concerns and have them propose and analyze potential solutions to these issues from multiple perspectives. We do this by attending conferences (virtually this year) and having students assume the roles of officials from other nations who try to create solutions that not only address global concerns, but are also in-line with their own nation's policies. This requires interaction and negotiation with students from Penncrest as well as other schools.

The National Art Honor Society programs inspire and recognize students with an outstanding ability and keen interest in the visual arts. A high school honor society for visual arts students in grades 10-12, the NAHS program is more than just an “art club”. Students are required to meet eligibility criteria for membership as detailed in your chapter’s constitution and bylaws.
Criteria:~Membership in this chapter shall be based upon art scholarship, service, and character. ~To be eligible for selection to membership in this chapter, the candidate must be a high school student enrolled in grades 10, 11, or 12 in this school, and have completed a period equivalent to one semester of art in this school. ~An eligible candidate shall have a minimum art scholarship average of B, or this school’s equivalent. This is the national minimum standard of achievement required for eligibility and shall remain fixed. ~An eligible candidate shall have a minimum of a 3.0 overall GPA. ~Members may remain active during such time when there is no art on their class schedule, as long as they complete the minimum school and community service credit hours.

Open to all students, the clubs focus is to motivate, inspire and unify the PHS minority community. Through academic, cultural, social and community outreach activities, the club aims to familiarize the entire student body with multicultural experiences.

Eco Adventurers go out side and get things done. This club goes camping, whitewater rafting, hiking, rock climbing, etc. If it is outside we want to do it. We only meet to plan trips which may range from a few hours to a few days.

FBLA-is an association of students/members preparing for careers in business. FBLA helps students develop leadership abilities, and advancement within, a business or business-related occupation. Members learn how to engage in business enterprise, how to direct the affairs of a group, and how to compete in competitive events. These activities help prepare students to be better employees and better citizens. Organizational goals include: develop business leadership skills, strengthen the confidence of students in themselves and their work, create more interest in and understanding of American business enterprise, encourage members to develop individual projects that contribute to the home, business, and community, develop character, encourage and practice efficient money management.

The Medical Scholars Club is a group designed to help students explore educational and professional avenues that fall under the umbrella of the Allied Health Sciences. The allied health sciences include medicine, biomedical, pharmacological and chemical research as well as a variety of ancillary fields. Students participate in a flexible setting and have the opportunity to attend field trips that include live surgeries, perform and present team research, compete in the International BioOlympiad and participate in a variety of internships and volunteer activities. The club is open to anyone with interest and enthusiasm.

PHS Jazz

The Penncrest Jazz Program is open to any vocalists or instrumentalists who are interested in exploring America's Unique Art Form. The program consists of several bands of different sizes devoted to the study of style and improvisation as it relates to the genre of jazz. Each band has a weekly rehearsal and various performance opportunities throughout the year. You do not have to be rostered for a band class to participate.

The spring musical is a space for students to enrich their artistic and personal selves through a theatrical platform. Using musical theater, we focus on championing not only the actor in each student, but their humanity and personhood as well. We strive to maintain an environment that is absent of intimidation, oppression or harassment that produces quality entertainment at the high school level.
