News for Parents

Dear Title I families,

June 22, 2019 is my last day as as the Nickerson School Title 1 teacher because I am retiring from full time teaching. I loved being a part of the Nickerson School community and working with the Title 1 children and families and will truly miss you and your children!

Mrs. Jessica Young will be taking my place. Mrs. Young is currently working full time as a Title 1 teacher at Captain Albert Stevens. I am confident that the students are being left in very good hands.

Learn About Persistence!

On January 17, 2019 two art therapists from Belfast, Melissa Kelley and Lisa Cohn, presented an art therapy workshop that included making mobiles, but with an underlying message about the importance of focussing, persisting, and balancing tasks. Melissa and Lisa brought a several parent handouts as well as a wide array of art materials such as bead, shells, chains, pine cones, branches, and ribbons.

The workshop opened with a standing-on-one-foot balancing exercise for adults and children. As it became more and more difficult to maintain balance, the therapist had children share ideas about what you can do if you feel frustrated or like you can’t do something. The therapist then told the families that making a mobile would be frustrating, and to practice their ideas when things got hard. They assured the children that they were there to help and that everyone who tried would succeed.

Cooking Matters!

This fall six families at the Nickerson School in Swanville completed a five week class called Cooking Matters. The class was taught by Beth Chamberlin, through SNAP-ED. Cooking Matters teaches families about practical nutrition. We learned about label reading, shopping tips, and how to sneak more vegetables into children.

The children and their parents prepared a meal, ate, and cleaned up together. Families received a copy of the recipes and the ingredients to make the meal (or components of the meal) at home. We had a great time!

Happy Fall!

Title 1 lessons have started for the year!

The Title 1 program provides me with funds to buy materials for parents to use with their children at home. Please let me know if there are books, math manipulatives, or other resources you would find helpful, and I will order them.

Thank you to the parents who were able to visit on September 20th or 21st. I realize many parents are working during school hours. If you would like to visit the Title 1 room and see what your child does during lessons. please let me know. I will work with your schedule!
