How Do I Check Out Books?

How to Check Out Books

Completely Online

Our online catalog is available here. It's also embedded below.

On the top right corner there’s a Log In button, click on it! Your login information is:

Username: [rsu56 email address]

Password: [your last name in all lowercase]

Once you’re logged in, you can click on the search button to search for the title you want.

I found the book I want! Next, click on the little arrow button on the right of the title to open up the dropdown menu.

From there, click on the hand holding a book icon. That’s how you place a hold! Isn’t that handy.

Once your hold is placed, I’ll check out the book for you. It will have a bookmark in it, and the due date stamped in the back. Come to the library to pick it up from the circulation desk. Books must be returned on or before the due date. If you’d like to renew your book, email me.

Books are returned to the book drop, which is attached to the circulation desk.

In-Person

In-person checkouts can only be done between 8:00 and 11:00. After that, I won’t be in the building to check a book out for you. If you’d like a book after 11, use the online catalog to place a hold, and I’ll have the book ready for you the next morning.

If you want a book in the morning, come on down to the library and browse for yourself. If you already have a specific book in mind, it helps to use our online catalog to find the call number.

Once you’ve found the book on the shelf, bring it to the circulation desk. I’ll be there to check it out for you! I’ll give you a bookmark and stamp the due date into the due date slip in the back. Books must be returned on or before the due date. If you’d like to renew your book, email me!

Books are returned to the book drop, which is attached to the circulation desk.

Checkout Q&A

How many books can I check out?

5 maximum!

Can I return a book early?

Absolutely! If you finish with your book before the due date, just bring it to the book return and I’ll return it.

How many times can I renew a book?

That depends. If another student has put in a request to read the book you have checked out, you cannot renew it. If no one else wants the book, you can renew it up to 2 times.

What happens if I return a book late?

I will bother you about it until you either return it, or realize it’s lost.

What happens if I lose a book?

You’ll get a lot of emails from me asking you to make sure you’ve checked absolutely everywhere for the book. If you really can’t find it, you’ll have to pay to replace the book. Replacement costs vary from $10-50, so try your best to keep track of your books.
