These questions were developed by RSU 5 literacy coaches and can be used to support comprehension as your child reads to you or as you read to your child. They are geared toward grades K-2. If your child is older (grade 3 and above), this list of questions are great for having comprehension conversations at home.
Snap words or high frequency words (HFW) are the most common words that readers see in texts. In fact, 10 words (the, of, and, a, to, is, in, you, that, and it) account for 25% of the words children read and write.
Mastering a number of snap words allows students to read fluently and focus their attention on comprehension. Some high frequency words do not sound as they are spelled, making them difficult to decode using letter sounds. While the lists of snap words in our first and second grade phonics program include both decodable and irregular words, it's most helpful to focus on the irregular ones, like they, want, said, etc.
