The HISET® exam, the new alternative to the GED® test, certifies a test taker’s attainment of academic knowledge and skills equivalent to those of a high school graduate. You have the option to take the test on paper or computer.
The HiSET® exam helps adult learners achieve their college and career goals to expand opportunities and changes lives. Find a test center location near you, or learn more about taking the test at home.
Starting the journey to earn a high school diploma or equivalency can feel daunting, but it’s a life-changing experience. One of our graduates shared their inspiring story:
"When I left school at 15, I thought my dream of earning a diploma was out of reach. Years later, I decided it was time to take control of my future. After contacting RSU 39 Adult Education, the support I received gave me the courage to begin.
The process started with placement tests in reading and math, which weren’t as intimidating as I expected. Soon, I began pre-tests in key subjects, passing most on my first attempt. Math was a challenge—I missed the mark by one point on my first try. It was disheartening, but I reminded myself why I started: to move forward and do more.
With the help of evening math classes and tutoring, I finally passed. Each step brought me closer to my goal, and on November 1, I took my final tests. I was nervous but determined. When I saw my passing scores, I couldn’t believe it—I had earned my equivalency diploma! Looking back, the process wasn’t as hard as I thought. RSU 39 Adult Education made it possible, and now I know: It’s never too late to achieve your dreams.”
This journey highlights the power of determination and the life-changing impact of education. If you’ve ever considered completing your high school education, there’s no better time to start than now.
In January 2014, Maine changed its approved high school equivalency test from the GED to the HiSET.
HiSET provides adults with the opportunity to obtain a high school equivalency certification with the same legal standing as a high school diploma. Through a pre-testing, preparation, and testing program, it allows test-takers to demonstrate proficiency of the academic skills and knowledge expected by employers and post-secondary institutions. HiSET™ consists of five subtests:
Language Arts-Reading
Language Arts-Writing
Mathematics
Science
Social Studies
While each person enters the process with varying academic skills, the steps are the same: CASAS math and reading assessments to help focus the right development of skills by classwork/studying/tutoring, pass all five pre-tests, and finally pass the five Official HiSET exams.
