Reading Intervention Program and Literacy Instruction at Eliot Elementary School

How is my child placed for FLEX reading?

We use a variety of assessments to determine what your child needs in order to be a proficient reader:

  • DIBELS: Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills

  • Fountas & Pinnell's Benchmark Assessment

  • Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum (K-2)

  • LexiaCore5

DIBELS

All students K-3 are screened using DIBELS three times per year; fall, winter, and spring. This screener is administered by the reading intervention staff.

Fountas & Pinnell Benchmarks

The Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark is one of the reading assessments we use to assess the level your child is reading. These assessments are administered at least three times per year. We take notes while they are reading, assess comprehension and make a plan for their instruction!

Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum K-2

Each level of the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum provides 35 weeks of daily lessons, focusing on eight phonemic awareness skills, along with two additional activities to develop letter and sound recognition, and language awareness. Lessons are designed for a classroom setting and only take 10-12 minutes.
