Literacy Club has come to OMS! Our new program is designed to provide extra help in reading and writing to students who are below grade level. Literacy Club membership is based on our screening which includes: NWEA scores, student writing samples, and the SIPPS assessment. Students meet in their Literacy Club during their study hall time a few days a week. Sessions last approximately 25 minutes. Students work with our literacy interventionist, Amanda Palmer. A literacy interventionist is an educator who specializes in helping students with reading and/or writing. They assess student needs, design targeted instructional plans, and provide one-on-one or small-group instruction. They collaborate with classroom teachers and use evidence-based strategies from the science of reading to help students achieve reading proficiency.
Sample Literacy Club Session Activities:
Academic games
Reading and interactive books
Writing
Utilizing tech integration such as SIPPS and Lexia
The OMS Literacy Club and Mrs. Palmer's position is supported through Title I Federal Funds.
What can families do to support their child at home?
RSU 26 seeks the active participation of all Title 1 students’ parents/guardians in improving their child’s academic achievement. Parents are encouraged to communicate regularly with teachers and Title 1 staff to discuss the progress of their child.
•Have your child read 30 minutes or more daily.
•Communicate and attend parent/teacher conferences.
•Review the Home-School Partnership Compact below.
•Celebrate your child’s successes!

In order to help all students achieve high standards, we ask parents to provide:
Assistance with homework when needed and a quiet place to work
Nutritious meals and snacks and lots of exercise opportunities for kids
Communicate in a timely fashion with school staff when questions or concerns arise.
Consistent expectations for appropriate behavior
The school staff in return will provide:
A close working relationship with the student’s family centered around communication
A positive approach in the classroom that focuses on student’s strengths
A safe learning environment
All materials necessary to participate in learning tasks
High expectations for all learners
We ask that students be invested in their own learning. Things that students can do include:
Focus on the learning activities provided
Find time to read every day
Talk with their parents about what is going on in school
Treat others with respect to allow for a safe and caring school for all
Come to school every day
Communicate with school staff if they have concerns or questions
