Concussions

Concussion Information

Recent research has led to an increased awareness of concussion injuries. RSU 21 takes an active role to address concussions and reduce long-term effects from injuries.

A concussion is a type of brain injury that changes the way the brain normally works. A concussion is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head. Concussions can also occur from a blow to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Even what seems to be a mild bump to the head can be serious. Concussion injuries are all unique and can be unpredictable.

Preventing concussion is an important first step. Helmets, seat belts, and safe-play practices all help reduce or minimize injuries.

Any signs of concussion should be reported immediately to a coach, athletic trainer, school nurse, teacher, parent, or other adult. If a concussion is suspected, the student should be evaluated by their health care provider. The healthcare provider, parent, student, and school staff can work together to ensure a safe return to school and athletics.
