This graphic novel follows a boy named Carlos and his family's move from Cuba to the United States in 1956. I have really enjoyed the rich illustrations and the dialog between Carlos, his family, friends and school mates is authentic and full of heart.
This romance/horror hybrid was an interesting read. A young girl is selectively mute because her voice causes others to die. A young boy is hired as her sign language interpretor and they end up falling in love. They quest to find out what is happening to her and how they might solve the problem.
This book had me finishing it so quickly, my mind was still reeling! The main character Sariyeh can hear what other people need - not what they think they need or what they want - but what would actually prove to be useful to them in the next few moments. When her friend goes missing at a music festival, her last need of pepper spray, sends Sariyeh into a panic.
This futuristic novel seems to be a dystopian take on the Covid 19 pandemic. Told in alternating view points, characters are learning more about their lives and what is important to them as they try to avoid being infested with Crown Royale - a disease that either leaves them donating all of their possessions and living a carefree existence or kills them.
