What is AI?
Artificial Intelligence
Began in the 1950s and has slowly evolved into the AI we see and use today.
Is a branch of computer science that enables applications and computers to simulate human learning and intelligence (https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/artificial-intelligence)
Can be trained, through computer programming, to understand language, recognize patterns, or make decisions based on data.
Is baked into many of our everyday technology tools including the new Apple iPhone, Alexa, Siri, predictive grammar and spelling (auto correct), and self-driving vehicles to mention a few.
What is GAI?
Generative AI (GAI) is the latest artificial intelligence component.
GAI creates complex, original content from a user’s input or request (https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/artificial-intelligence)
GAI is not without errors and requires human interaction to determine accuracy of output. GAI misinformation or inaccurate output is referred to as hallucinations. Hallucinations occur when a GAI tool has gaps in its information base and invents answers.
Four examples of types of GAI (https://static1.squarespace.com/static/64398599b0c21f1705fb8fb3/t/673ce545fbe13d5aba147bba/1732044102066/HoustonISDAIGuidebook.pdf)
Conversational AI or Chatbots, such as ChatGPT or Microsoft CoPilot
Multimedia AI such as DALL-E or Canva Image Generator
Generative Search such as Perplexity
AI Writing Support Tools such as Grammarly or Quill
