CURRICULUM, INSTRUCTION AND ASSESSMENT
Welcome to RSU 19! We are excited to share how our district comes together to support every student from Pre-K all the way through high school graduation. The RSU #19 district strategic plan guides the curriculum, instruction and assessment program as well as the professional development that is offered to support instructional practices that best support students’ learning experiences to meet graduation standards.
RSU 19 staff and administrators guide the ongoing development of an integrated system of curriculum, instruction and assessment to support all learners in the development of knowledge, skills and understandings necessary for success in school and life. With input from students, staff and community members, RSU 19 has defined the type of graduate we envision as described in the Nokomis Portrait of a Graduate . Our approach supports student learning and growth as a smooth journey from Pre-K through 12th grade. The curriculum gives us a clear roadmap for what students should know and achieve, while our assessment system gives us the real-time data we need to tailor support—whether a student needs extra help or an added challenge. That same data also guides our teachers' day-to-day instruction and ongoing training and professinal development.
RSU #19's curriculum encompasses Maine’s cross-content Guiding Principles as well as content-specific graduation standards and indicators aligned with state and national standards. Teachers throughout the district have worked together over the past several years to develop instructional units and assessments to ensure all students have the supports needed to attain the knowledge and skills needed for success beyond high school. Teachers use common scoring criteria which they have collaboratively developed to monitor student progress toward meeting those standards. We encourage families to become a partner with the schools and teachers in creating a supportive environment that encourages learning and personal growth for all students.
