CURRICULUM, INSTRUCTION AND ASSESSMENT
RSU 19 staff and administrators guide the ongoing development of an integrated system of curriculum, instruction and assessment to support all learners in the development of knowledge, skills and understandings necessary for success in school and life. With input from students, staff and community members, RSU 19 has defined the type of graduate we envision in the Nokomis Portrait of a Graduate developed over the last several years. The system is designed as a pre-kindergarten to grade 12 continuum to support students’ growth and learning. The curriculum framework defines what students need to know and be able to do. The assessment system provides data which is used to inform specific supports, interventions and extensions for students as well as teachers’ daily instructional practices and professional development.
The curriculum encompasses Maine’s cross-content Guiding Principles as well as content-specific graduation standards and indicators aligned with state and national standards. Teachers throughout the district have worked together over the past 6 years to develop instructional units and assessments to ensure all students have the supports needed to attain the knowledge and skills needed for success beyond high school. Teachers use common scoring criteria which they have collaboratively developed to monitor student progress toward meeting those standards.
The district’s strategic plan guides the curriculum, instruction and assessment program as well as the professional development that is offered to support instructional practices that best support students’ learning experiences to meet graduation standards.
