We are fourth and fifth grade students in RSU 18 who have been studying our local history. Did you know Oakland, Maine was once the axe capital of the world? Or that Belgrade attracted famous visitors (including E.B. White) to its hotels and sporting camps? Or that Sidney was named for Sir Philip Sidney, but no one knows why?
With great thanks to our local historical societies, and the Maine Arts Commission, here are some projects that share our learning.

First: a bit about the history of Oakland, Maine. Work for this project was inspired by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission in celebration of Maine's bicentennial.
