The PES library has been learning how different parts of the world celebrate the New Year.
When we returned from vacation classes discussed how their families celebrated New Year's. Several classes wrote reading resolutions. Next, students learned about the Chinese or Lunar New Year. They learned:
Families clean the past year out of their houses to welcome the new year.
The Chinese/Lunar New Year is celebrated at different times each year.
Children receive red envelopes of money for the new year.
The Lion Dance and the Dragon Dance are special dances performed by trained dancers. These dances are believed to scare off spirits and bring prosperity in the new year.
One of this year's Chickadee Book Award nominees is Tricky Chopsticks by Sylvia Chen. In the book, Jenny Chow is terrible at using chopsticks! She is worried she will be the only one in her family to never learn how to use them. She figures out a way to practice and succeeds! The same week the cafeteria was serving "Chinese Take-Out," including chopsticks. Some students brought in their own chopsticks with "helpers" or tried eating with the ones they were given. The cafeteria gave the library a class set of chopsticks to practice with. After trying to pick up pom-poms, beads and rubber bands, they will be experts at the next special lunch!
Second graders were challenged with rubber band "noodles."
First graders picked up the technique quickly!
新年快樂
Gung hei fat choy!
Kinders too!
Students learned about Hanukkah, including how to play the dreidel game.
Kinders love to read!
Students have been doing a great job in the library! I am impressed with how responsible they are with their books. Students are doing a great job caring for them at home and returning them on time. As a reminder, students' books are checked out for one week at a time. They are welcome to renew their books if they haven't finished them.
