Very soon, we will be saying goodbye to our lovely 8th graders! A few 8th graders are going to different schools other than Eureka, such as Lafayette and Vianney. Multiple people have explained that they are quite nervous about entering a new school, but they are excited at the same time! One 8th grader also told us they are excited to go to high school because they are very excited for more freedom and enjoyment, as they will be treated more as adults rather than children.
8th graders have had tons of joyful memories, but some of the most memorable ones are playing games with friends in PE and spending time with friends at lunch!
Good luck 8th graders! We will miss you!!!
Summer is nearing. That means warm weather, the end of school, and, of course, a variety of different bugs you'll see (and in some cases hear) outside. Here's a breakdown of a few bugs you'll see outside this May:
Brood XIV Cicadas:
These kinds of cicadas, similar to the ones we saw last summer, have been underground since 2008. Here's what you need to know
Scientific name: Magicicada spp.
Family: Cicadidae in the order of Hemiptera (true bugs)
Food: Cicadas eat plant sap.
Can they hurt you? A common misconception about cicadas is that they are harmful. They don't have the physical capabilities to hurt you. Cicadas cannot sting or bite because they don't have a stinger, mandibles, or any kind of jaw for that matter.
June Bugs:
Scientific name: Phyllophaga spp.
Family: Scarabaeidae
Food: June Bugs eat plant leaves
Can they hurt you?: No!
Ticks
Scientific name: Ixodidae
Family: Ixodida
Food: Ticks are parasites, so they feed on the blood of humans or other mammals
Can they hurt you?: Yes! Not only do ticks drink your blood, they can also carry serious diseases such as Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, ect.
Horse Flies
Scientific name: Tabanidae
Family: Diptera
Food: Male horseflies feed on nectar and plant sap, however, the females need blood to develop their eggs. Female horseflies will bite any mammal and use her sharp mouthparts to pierce human skin and suck their blood.
Can they hurt you?: Yes. Horseflies deliver a painful bite. At least the bite will just be painful, and, at most, it can result in dizziness and swelling.
Mayfly:
Scientific name: Heptageniid
Family: Ephemeroptera
Food: Mayflies live underground most of their life and only emerge when they're adults, and they do not have the appropriate mouthparts to eat anything they'd find above ground. When they are underground, however, they can eat, but it varies by species.
Can they hurt you?: Mayflies cannot bite or sting; they are simply a nuisance as they collect into giant swarms around lights.
