Betsy DeMerit Memorial Track Invitational

Betsy DeMerit was a pioneer in women’s sports in Wisconsin. Long before federal Title IX legislation passed in 1972, DeMerit, then a physical education teacher at Webb High, was working hard to give girls attending her school competitive opportunities. She started the girls track program here and coached a Reedsburg team to a state title in the first ever WIAA girls state track meet in 1971. Betsy attended as many home meets in years past as she was able. Betsy Ann DeMerit, age 92, left this world on Monday, Aug. 24, 2020 at the Reedsburg Area Senior Life Center in Reedsburg. If you ever had the chance to talk to Betsy about the 1971 team, you would have seen her smile a lot. Betsy's love for Track and Field opened the door for other girls’ sports in Reedsburg and around the state. She will be sorely missed.

In honor of her contribution to Reedsburg sports, particularly for girls, the Reedsburg Invitational Track Meet was renamed as the Betsy DeMerit Invitational several years ago and after her passing we honor her with the Betsy DeMerit Memorial Track Invitational. Betsy, or Mrs. D, as she was affectionately called by many students she coached and taught, taught in the Reedsburg School District for 22 years, retiring in 1988.

Betsy was inducted into the Wisconsin Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2007. We compete in her honor and in her memory.

May god bless you, Betsy and keep you as we will keep you in our hearts forever.
