Preschool
Technology

Why will my child use technology in preschool? Technology is everywhere, and while we don't want young children overloaded with screen time, we do want to set the foundation for being responsible digital citizens. We are teaching how to make healthy and safe choices with regards to technology devices.

What will my child be learning? Most children can easily use a touchscreen to play games on cellphones and tablets. At SSPS, students will learn to access learning games using a mouse, a trackpad, and a touchscreen. Please see the learning indicators and objectives below.

What technology will my child use? When your child visits the computer lab, they will use Chromebooks. In the classroom, your child may use a Chromebook or Chromebase (large, touchscreen Chrome devices), the SMART Board Interactive Display, and tablets.

How do I know my child will not access inappropriate websites? SSPS is part of Rio Rancho Public Schools. Our IT department approves all applications and websites, and continually filters the internet. We exclusively use the STARFALL learning website in the computer lab. All technology use is closely monitored by staff.

NM PreK Essential Indicators demonstrated in the Computer Lab

E.I. #19.1:  Cares for personal and group possessions. (Cares for possessions)

E.I. #24.2:  Develops increasing independence during activities, routines, and play. (Independence)

Computer Science (CS) Standards

The NM Public Education Department has adopted Computer Science Standards for K-12 classrooms. Computer Science (CS), is the study of principles and use of computers.

In preschool, we are building Computer Science skills to prepare learners to succeed in the digital world.

Preschool Students will:

Learn the names and functions for the parts of a Chromebook (screen, keyboard, input devices).

Use input and output devices (mouse, trackpad, touchscreen, headphones)

Navigate learning apps with increasing indpendence (click, drag, drop)

Use technology to explore ideas (search, demonstrate knowledge)

Use technology to create (art, code)

We exclusively use the STARFALL website in our Computer Lab. Starfall is a learning website developed by teachers to improve foundational learning skills such as counting, letter sounds, and rhyming. It also teaches children how to click, drag and drop, and make choices. There is no advertising, or personal information collected. SSPS Families can access Starfall at home. Please reach out to your child's teacher for details.
