Your school's health office staff promotes student health through early identification and detection of hearing and vision difficulties
All children are screened for vision and hearing in accordance with the New Mexico Department of Health guidelines
If a parent/guardian requests exclusion from screenings they must provide the school Health Office with written notification of this request. If you have any questions related to screenings please contact your School Nurse
Children with vision problems usually don't complain of pain. You may not see any changes in your child's behavior related to vision problems. Most children can't tell you they are having difficulty with their vision, for some that is because the good eye takes over for the weaker eye. Children do not outgrow amblyopia or "lazy eye". It requires treatment to correct. Some vision problems can actually lead to permanent vision loss. An eye examination by an eye care specialist, optometrist or ophthalmologist, is required if your child does not pass the vision screening at school. Early treatment can lead to corrected vision.
Hearing screenings at school has an important role in identifying children who may have hearing loss. A child with hearing loss is at risk for poor academic performance unless intervention and appropriate management is provided. A minimal hearing loss can make it hard for a child to listen and learn in the classroom.
If you are concerned about your child's hearing, please contact your school nurse.
