Why is my child in this program?
All parents of students entering the public school system for the first time must complete a Language Usage Survey (LUS). If there are one or more responses confirming the use of a language other than English, then the district must continue the process by administering the WIDA Placement Test (W-APT), which is the department-approved English language proficiency screener used in New Mexico.
My child speaks English, why is he/she in this program?
The English Language Development Program emphasizes and supports academic language to ensure that students have meaningful access to the instructional program.
How can this program help my child?
This program provides an additional opportunity to validate, affirm and respect the language and culture of your child to support academic success.
How much time will my child be out of the class?
This additional support can range from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the specific needs of your child. The time spent within the program is aligned to the state content standards.
