The goal of school social work services is to assist the student, who receives Special Education Services, in reaching his/her fullest academic and personal potential within the school setting. School social workers facilitate and participate as a member of an educational team to address situations and conditions that interfere with the student’s learning process.

School social workers bring unique skills to the educational setting.
These skills include community organization, group process, family assistance, crisis management, individual casework and a knowledge base of developmental stages and behavioral/emotional challenges. School social work interventions are tailored to meet the needs of the individual student and family.
Interventions may include some of the following:
Screening students to identify need for services; develop goals and objectives.
Individual and group counseling.
Conflict mediation and resolution without violence.
Advocacy for the student, family and school.
Individual, school and community crisis intervention and prevention services.
Behavior intervention and management services.
Family assistance: strengthening home school communication, parenting and behavior management strategies.
Collaboration with community based service agencies to meet student/family needs in a holistic, comprehensive fashion.
Information and referral services.
Staff development and training.
Classroom support.

School Social Workers abide by the NASW Professional Code of Ethics and are licensed Masters Social Workers as well as licensed, independent social workers.
