HISTORY

2009

In Cleveland's inaugural season, 4 individual athletes qualified to the State Championships.  On the girls side, the Storm was represented by Malia Gonzales (7th), Mikayla Jaramillo (23rd), and Alana Littleford (24th).  Malia Gonzales' 7th place finish garnered All-State Honors.  On the boy's side, freshman Matt Smith(42nd) was the lone Storm representative.

2010

In 2010, both teams opened the eyes of the cross country community in the State of New Mexico.  Both the boys and the girls teams ended the season with a District Championship.  The girls squad finished 2nd place at the State Championships while the boys finished 3rd.  Both teams brought home trophies!  Three All-State Athletes were crowned in the process.  Sophomore Luis Martinez shocked the state by winning the individual title, the first individual State Champion at Cleveland High School.

2011

THE STORM IS HERE!  That was the statement that was made to the state of New Mexico in 2011.  Again, both teams were District Champions.  At the State Championships, in horrible weather, it was a Storm Sweep.  The girls team became the first ever team state champions in Cleveland history!  The girls absolutely destroyed the competition by having 4 girls in the top 10, and junior Malia Gonzales took the individual title.  Not to be outdone, the boys too put 4 runners in the top 10 and junior Luis Martinez successfully defended his individual title.  Luis Martinez was named Gatorade Athlete of the Year in cross country.

2012

The success continued in 2012.  For the third year in a row, both squads earned a District Championship.  The boys team once again dominated at the state level, successfully defending their title from the year before.  5 boys found themselves in the top 10 to earn All-State honors.  Included in those was Luis Martinez, who won his third consecutive individual state title.  In his last race for the Storm, Luis concluded a career that saw him undefeated in the state of New Mexico for 3 years!  The girls team earned Runner-up honors.  Senior Malia Gonzales was back to back individual champion to cap off an amazing career for the Storm.  Both Luis Martinez and Malia Gonzales were name Gatorade Athlete of the Year in the sport of cross country.

2013

In 2013, the boys squad brought home the red trophy by being state runner-ups.  2 boys found themselves in the top 10 to earn All-State honors.  On the girls side, the super young squad finished 5th at the state championships.

2014

2014 was a season of patience for both the boys and girls squads.  Both teams were extremely young and neither team qualified to the State Championships.  5 individuals did punch their ticket to state however.  On the girls side, the Storm was represented by 9th graders Amanda Mayoral and Britney Lovato, and 8th grader Jenny Mueller.  Amanda Mayoral let everyone know what the future held by finishing 2nd overall.  Seniors Quadry Escalada and Dante Prairie represented the Storm extremely well on the boys side.

2015

CLEVELAND'S BACK!  This is exactly what the state was thinking at the state championships in 2015.  The girls team, having not qualified the year before, bounced back in spectacular fashion to win not only a District Championship, but a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!  Two girls earned All-State honors.  Included in those was sophomore Amanda Mayoral who was individual State Champion.  Amanda was also named Gatorade Athlete of the Year in cross country.  The boys team, while still very young, finished 5th place at State, a year removed from not qualifying at all.

2016

In 2016, the girls team brought home yet another trophy from the state meet by finishing 3rd place.  Junior Amanda Mayoral successfully defended her individual title and was once again named Gatorade Athlete of the Year in cross country.  On the boys side, the boys were able to improve from their 2015 finish by finishing 4th place at state.  Sophomore Yonas Haile earned All-State honors by finishing 5th place.

2019

BOYS 3 PEAT AND GIRLS GET NEW CHAMP!!  The girls team capped off an impressive season by bringing home another state trophy in finishing 3rd place.  Two girls earned All-State honors.  Of those, was freshman Leah Futey, who put together an incredible race to win the individual title.  Leah was named Gatorade Athlete of the Year in cross country.  The boys, one week after winning the District Championships, stormed the field to win a third straight team title in dominant fashion.  Two boys finished in the top 10 to earn All-State honors.

2020

THE COVID YEAR.  2020 was definitely a season to remember and probably the most difficult cross country season ever.  The season was postponed several times and didn't actually take place until March of 2021.  Athletes had to do much of their training on their own and were forced to run in masks the entire time.  The cross country season of 2020 will be remembered as one that tested athletes dedication, and perserverence.  Many athletes couldn't handle the obstacles the season presented and quit before the season took place.  The girls team saw many athletes quit, but despite their losses found a way to qualify to the state championships and finish 6th place with a determined group of girls.  Sophomore Leah Futey was individual state runner-up.  The boys team displayed a great deal of strength throughout the pandemic and stayed together and in the process won a 4th straight team championship.  Two boys earned All-State honors.  One of which was individual runner-up and first year cross country man, senior Ricky Rangel.  The other was Senior transfer Chris Humetewa.

2021

ONCE AGAIN, BOTH SQUADS BRING HOME TROPHIES! The girls team showed incredible improvement all season long and were able to put together their best meet all season at state to bring home a third place trophy.  Leah Futey, for the fourth year in a row, earned All-State honors.  The boys showed equal improvement all season long and put themselves in the position to win the state championships for the 5th year in a row.  They battled hard at state and were able to earn a third place trophy.  Both Cody Toya and Caden Nunn earned All-State honors.

2022

THE GIRLS BRING THE BLUE TROPHY BACK TO CLEVELAND!!  For the first time since 2017, the Cleveland girls cross country team won the 5A State Championship.  The Lady Storm was once again, and for the last time, lead by senior Leah Futey.  Leah ran away from the entire field to claim her second individual state title and her 5th consecutive All-State honors.  Also claiming All-State honors was senior Eliana Rivera with a 7th place finish.  Eliana, who improved by leaps and bounds from the prior season, was the unsung hero of the season, finishing in the top 10 at every meet she ran in.  New-comer KC Winters narrowly missed All-State by finishing 12th place overall. Senior Marina Weideman, junior Noelle Manzanares, and freshman Sophia Yepa and Naomi St. Clair rounded out the state championship squad.  The boys narrowly missed bringing home a trophy by finishing 4th place.  Sophomore Antwon Shendo lead the boys squad with a 7th place finish, earning his first All-State honors.
