What is the Flesch-Kincaid grade?
The formula used for Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease and Grade-Level Scores analyzes word length, number of words in a sentence, average number of syllables in words, etc. For example:
A reading ease score of 50.9 or below indicates that 50% of the readers will understand the text.
A grade score of 7.9 or below indicates a 7th grade reading level.
The formula is important for projects in which the reading ease or grade level is specified. If there are specific Flesch-Kincaid requirements for a project you are working on, it will be included in the project guidelines.
To use the Flesch-Kincaid analysis, follow these steps:
Write your text and/or copy the text into the appropriate text box on the Workbench.
Select the F-K icon from the tool bar.
Click out of the text box, and the Flesch-Kincaid reading ease or grade level will appear in the name bar above the text box.
Note: The formula does not auto-update as you type. You must click the F-K icon again to get updated results after making changes.
