Your Chromebook will turn on automatically when opened within 10 seconds. Pressing the power button during this wait will turn the device off.
Shut down your Chromebook when you’re not using it - especially for long breaks. First log out. Then use the “Shut down” option on the screen (don’t use the power button) for best care and optimal performance. Just closing your Chromebook puts it in “sleep mode”, but the battery can still be drained in this state.
Shutting down your Chromebook also keeps your account safe by preventing others from using it.
Finally, shutting down helps to keep your Chromebook running well. This is true of most electronic devices, so get in this habit now.
Don't let your Chromebook battery get to 0% charge - this can damage the battery! We notice many students coming in after long breaks with Chromebooks that won’t turn on due to completely dead batteries. Charge your Chromebook every night!
If you have a Lenovo Chromebook with 2 USB ports, be sure to charge it from the port by the "Lenovo" imprint - this port also has a plug icon by it. The other port is a USB connection only - it's not for charging.
Update Your Chromebook
Keep your Chromebook up-to-date. It will run better. Here are some directions for manually updating your Chromebook. You can update your Chromebook anytime you have an Internet connection.
Click on the time in the bottom right corner of the screen.
Click on “Settings”.
On the left, click “About Chrome OS”.
In the middle of the screen, click the “Check for updates” button.
After the updates are complete, a “Restart” button may appear. Click this button to restart your Chromebook and complete the update process.
Carry your Chromebook with two hands and not by the screen!!! Carrying your Chromebook by the screen will damage it.
*** The adjacent photos show damage from handling a Chromebook by the screen. ***
Don't store your Chromebook in very hot or very cold places.
You're required to keep your case on your Chromebook.
Remember that backpacks have Chromebooks in them!!! Be careful with your backpack and other people's as well! For example, don't throw backpacks, sleep on backpacks, or step on backpacks. And keep backpacks dry!
Be careful handling your Chromebook power cord. Do not pull on it or carry it from the cord with the block hanging. Hold on to the entire cord instead of letting it dangle. This is true for headphones or anything with a cord. Hold onto the plug when unplugging it from the wall.
Keep your Chromebook clean. Our district Technology site has detailed information about cleaning your Chromebook: District Technology device cleaning web page
Please don't remove any inventory tags. They take time to replace in our record keeping system and may result in errors in your media center record.
