ETHOS STATEMENT
The Royal and Prior School is a Christian, co-educational, comprehensive school under the
patronage of the Donegal Protestant Board of Education. The Donegal Protestant Board of
Education, established under the Educational Endowment Scheme 1891, consists of four
nominees of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and four nominees of the Church of Ireland
who together appoint a representative of the Methodist Conference and a representative of
other Protestant denominations. The Board, as so constituted, annually co-opts up to a
maximum of six other persons.
The Royal and Prior school was formed in 1971 as a result of the amalgamation of the
Royal School, Raphoe founded in 1608, and the Prior School Lifford founded in 1880.
The school seeks to provide an educational environment in which students develop
spiritual and moral values, personal and social skills and the highest standards of
excellence of which they are capable, in all aspects of their school activities.
The spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of each child will be based
upon the values of Christian tradition: love of neighbour, the pursuit of truth and justice,
the challenge of service and duty and the experience of trust and forgiveness.
These values and virtues find expression in the curriculum, character and life of the school through:
a) Spiritual development which recognises the religious dimension of
education through the curriculum and acts of worship.
b) Moral development which builds character.
c) Cultural development which incorporates our Christian heritage.
d) =Mental and physical development which releases each child’s full potential to grow
in the image of God.
The work of the school is conducted in an atmosphere of tolerance and respect for religious
differences. Moral values such as honesty, justice, fairness, consideration for others and
civic responsibility are nurtured and protected. The justification of these qualities is based
on the Bible and the example derived from the life, teaching, death and resurrection of
Jesus Christ.
This Ethos Statement has been prepared by the Patron of the School in pursuance of
Section 15.2 (b) of the Education Act 1998 and endorsed by the Board of Management.
