What does math learning look like for a three year-old?
Three year-old children learn that counting means counting each object only once without skipping or double counting. They are memorizing the order number from 1-10. They also are learning that when they count, the last number represents the total number of the count. They are beginning to identify some numerals too.
How different is math learning for a four year-old?
Four year-old children learn the concepts as listed above and build upon them. They begin to develop stronger number sense. For example, they build an understanding of the ways numbers build, how adding 1 leads to the next number in the count sequence. They also learn how there are a variety of ways to add (compose) and subtract (decompose) numbers. They are memorizing the number order from 0-20. They are learning that the way we use numbers can be flexible and that talking about it helps us understand the different ways we see numbers.
