As the school year begins, I think it is important to establish routines for just about every classroom activity: passing out papers, turning in homework, working in groups and with partners, and so on. It is no less important to establish structures around how we read. A new book that explores this idea is Disrupting Thinking by Kylene Beers and Bob Probst. I have gotten many good ideas from this quick read about how to teach kids to use reading frameworks and other structures. This week we are working on the BHH Framework (Book-Head-Heart) and the five signposts to notice and note while reading nonfiction. Stop by if you have any questions at all. I'd love to discuss these ideas with you.
