At Camp Abilities, athletes learn the basics of rock climbing on belay. Rowan University has an indoor rock wall as well as several high and low ropes elements for athletes to experience.
Our canoeing program incorporates instruction in how to load, paddle, and steer the boat, as well as basic water safety for boating. Athletes work with one another and their coaches to navigate the Rowan pool.
Orienteering is an essential hiking skill consisting of understanding cardinal directions, navigating using a compass, and reading maps. Orienteering skills can enhance orientation and mobility for students with visual impairments. Camp Abilities has also worked with the Department of Environmental Science to teach foraging, the art and science of locating edible plants in the local environment, and the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences to teach about aquaponics and growing healthy food.
Athletes learn about other aspects of being an athlete throughout camp, such as first aid for basic injuries, where our food comes from, and how to make a healthy meal using simple appliances.
