What is a robot?

Roversa is a robot, but what does that really mean?

Robotics is a rapidly evolving field, and the capabilities of robots continue to change. Still, most people who work with robots agree on three big ideas: robots sense, think, and act.

Robots are also computing devices. Like laptops or mobile phones, they combine hardware and software to take in information, process it, and produce an output. What makes robots unique is that their outputs are physical—they move, light up, make sounds, or interact with the world around them.

In the activities below, students explore these questions:

These introductory lessons are designed for Roversa while focusing on ideas that can be adapted to other robotics and physical computing tools.
