Expectations & Management

EXPECTATIONS

Physical Education / Wellness class is meant to be a fun, active learning environment. We will be moving, dancing, throwing, catching, kicking, exercising and running.

For each child to do all of these things to the best of their ability, they need to dress appropriately for activity on the days they come to class.

Please make sure your student dresses in appropriate clothing:

  • Wear sneakers / tennis shoes (no open-toed shoes like sandals or flip-flops, please)

  • Wear clothing conducive to movement

  • Girls must wear shorts under dresses

If students are not going to participate because of health or injury reasons, a nurse or doctor's note is required. Specific dates of non-participation are required on the note.

________________________________________

Physical Education is a class like all others in the school. Appropriate behavior and respect for others is expected. Students should use equipment appropriately and when instructed to do so.

Following directions in class is very important and will help keep all students safe and having fun!

Capturing Kids Hearts

Meet and Greet:

We greet the students at the door with a handshake in the mornings or at the start of each class. This builds a sense of love and respect.

Good News:

A short time of about 3 to 5 minutes is spent sharing “Good News”. “Tell me something good that has happened since class yesterday!” This teaches positive thinking.

Social Contract

Students come up with a set of guidelines that will govern the classroom in their homeroom. These questions will help students create the contract. This can be done at home as well. Consider these questions when writing the contract:

How do you want to be treated by me (the teacher)?

How do you want to be treated by each other?

How do you think I (the teacher) want to be treated by you?

How do we want to treat each other when there is a conflict?

Teach Students to Self-Regulate Behavior:

Students should remind each other to follow the contract with a silent thumb sideways. Behaving becomes peer led. Remember, no consequences for minor contract breaches will be given from the teacher unless the student is not responding to the reminders from peers. We will have to remind students to remind each other. This is also an important training process for students.

Four Questions:

These questions should serve as guideline for handing misbehavior.

1. What are you doing?

2. What are you supposed to be doing?

3. Are you doing it?

4. What are you going to do about it?

Affirmations:

We teach students to affirm each other. Not on physical attributes, but on character qualities. We teach verbal affirmations or clapping.
