The mission of the Deep Wood Elementary school counseling department is to provide an equitable, data driven comprehensive guidance program that ensures all students achieve success by addressing the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students in a safe, nurturing, and culturally accepting environment.

The vision of the Deep Wood Elementary counseling department is:

The counseling services will be inclusive and respectful of differences in gender, religion, ethnicity, race, and ability.
To implement a comprehensive school counseling program that teaches students valuable academic, personal/social, and career skills that they will take with them throughout their entire educational experience.
For students to be empowered to reach their maximum potential and gain the necessary skills to become lifelong learners that sustain personal growth and contribute to society with compassion and pride in an ever-changing world.

What does an elementary counselor do?

Elementary school counselors are responsible for implementing a comprehensive school counseling program to enhance and increase student achievement.

Essential Roles of Elementary School Counselors

- Counseling – providing professional assistance and short-term support to a student or small group of students during situations impeding student success. School counselors do not provide therapy or long-term counseling in schools. However, school counselors are prepared to recognize and respond to student mental health needs and assist students and families seeking resources.
- Instruction – teaching students with a focus on student standards from the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success.
- Appraisal and Advisement – interpreting student assessment results and abilities, interests and achievements to help them make decisions about their future.
- Consultation and Collaboration – share strategies supporting student achievement with parents, teachers & administrators.
- Referrals – for students and families to community resources for additional assistance and information.
