Walsh Middle School World Languages/LOTE Grading Policy
The World Languages/LOTE Department of RRISD follows a research-proven curriculum which focuses on a proficiency-based model of student growth, as outlined by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL).
This 21st century model recognizes three modes of communication in second language learning: Interpretive (comprehension of visual and auditory input); Presentational (speaking or writing to present information) and Interpersonal (person-to-person speaking or writing).
The grading policy for the World Languages/LOTE department at Walsh includes the following categories, with their respective weights:
Presentational 30%
Interpretive 30%
Interpersonal 30%
Daily Work 10%
Often, a summative assessment will focus on one of the three modes. Occasionally, however, two or three modes may be used in tandem during an Integrated Performance Assessment, a comprehensive metric which allows students to show proficiency in multiple modes.
The Daily Work category may include short quizzes, in-class exercises, and homework.
An ideal distribution of graded work for a given 9 week grading period will consist of at least 2 grades in each of the 3 major categories and a balance of 5-9 grades in the Daily Work category, for a total of 11-15 grades, as in accordance with the Walsh Grading Policy.

HAC & Schoology Gradebook
The major categories as outlined above do not have equivalent category names in the Home Access or Schoology systems. Therefore, LOTE will use pre-loaded category names to stand in place, as shown in the table to the left:
Re-take Grades:
All students can participate in re-take opportunities if they have earned a grade lower than a 70. The teacher may have additional criteria that a student must meet in order to have the opportunity to participate in a re-take, e.g. attending tutorials, completing another assignment, and so on. A re-take opportunity might be completing the same assignment a second time, or might instead be an alternative assignment or method the teacher may use to assess student mastery. Students earning a 70 or above on the re-take will have a 70 recorded in the grade book.
A reasonable and fair opportunity will be provided to students to retake or redo a test, quiz, or failing assignment for a maximum grade of 70% credit in order to demonstrate growth and learning on various learning targets and objectives. A student will work with the teacher to decide on the time and location of the reteach and retest.
While it is the teacher’s responsibility to provide the opportunity for a re-take, the responsibility of the student is to take advantage of the opportunity given by the teacher. Missing work will be entered into the HAC in a timely manner.
Late Work / Incomplete Work:
Students will need to complete and give the teacher the Late/Incomplete Assignment ASAP. An assignment that is considered incomplete will be returned to student without a grade until it has been completed. 10 points will be deducted per day on an assignment if it is not submitted on time. After 3 days an assignment is a late a student will only be able to earn a maximum grade of 70. Our goal is to encourage student ownership and responsibility of their learning.
Absence Make-up Work / Tutorials:
Students who have a planned absence (school function, an appointment, family trip, etc.) should notify the teacher ahead of time so that they may be informed of the make-up expectations.
It is also the student's responsibility to request tutorial sessions, if needed, to complete missed assignments, and to turn them in within the allowed time. Students will have one complete school day to make up work for every day they were absent. This means, for instance, a student who misses Friday and the following Monday will need to turn in completed work at the beginning of class on Thursday of that week.
It is the student's responsibility to get their make-up work immediately upon returning to school. Again, we encourage student ownership and responsibility of their learning. If a student fails to meet the deadline, the assignment will be considered late (see Late Work above).
