Mrs. Hollenshead will be visiting classrooms regularly to teach counseling lessons. Lessons topics may include: social and emotional learning, career awareness, identity, kindness, growth and fixed mindset, resiliency, problem solving/conflict resolution, and many more.

In this first lesson, students will learn all about the role of a school counselor. We will be talking about ways school counselors can help students and how students can access Mrs. Hollenshead or Mrs. Dyke if they need someone to talk to during the school day.
Pk-We will talk about what it means to have a safe body and having personal space.
Kinder and 1st grade- We will talk about what big problems are vs small problems and how we can use Kelso's Choices to solve small problems on our own.
We will talk about what it means to have a growth mindset vs fixed mindset. We will talk about what perseverance means and how to embrace the "Power of Yet". Pk-We will talk about taking turns and how to solve conflict with friends.
Kinder and 1st grade- We will talk about how to identify different feelings and how we experience comfortable (happy, loved, proud) and uncomfortable (sad, angry, worried) feelings. We will also discuss how to solve conflict with friends.
We will talk about different emotions and how they make us feel. Students will also learn about a variety of tools to calm down big emotions. We will also discuss how to solve conflict with friends. In fifth grade we will talk about gossiping and spreading rumors. All concepts are scaffolded by grade level.
PK and Kinder

1st-5th grade
Counseling lessons will focus on having gratitude. Gratitude is a powerful positive emotion that involves being thankful for the good things in one's life. If you would like to learn more about developing habits of gratitude in your child click here. All concepts are scaffolded by grade level.
PK and Kinder
Counseling lessons will be focused on the importance of being honest.
1st Grade
Counseling lessons will be focused on the importance of personal space and having a safe body.
2nd-4th grade
We will be learning about “circle of control”. A simple tool that helps children understand what things they can control and what things they cannot. This helps reduce stress, build confidence, and guide positive choices.
5th grade
We will be learning about bully prevention. The different types of bullying and “David’s Law”. All concepts are scaffolded by grade level.
In January, all grade level classroom counseling lessons will focus on kindness, understanding empathy, and how we can show empathy. This is in addition to students talking about empathy, kindness, and respect in Second Step.
