Practicum in Health Science

Course Description

This course is designed for the student planning to enter a career in healthcare. This is an occupationally specific course designed to provide knowledge and skills for certification in an allied healthcare field. Students will develop knowledge and skills necessary to work as a pharmacy technician and gain experience in patient care settings.

During one semester, the students will participate in an unpaid clinical internship in a healthcare related area of their choosing. This provides students with an opportunity to see the day-to-day operations in the field of medicine that holds their interest. Students should begin looking for internships during the summer. It is ultimately the student’s responsibility to find & secure their internship location.

During the other semester, students will focus on learning the information needed in order to become a pharmacy technician. Students will spend time both in the classroom and at an onsite Walgreens Pharmacy location developing the knowledge and skills required to obtain certification in this field.

The students will learn about preparations to successfully acquire employment through topics such as leadership, communication, ethical and legal responsibilities, career preparation and employability. Our capstone project for the end of their senior year involves a professional portfolio that includes all of their various certifications and credentials earned in the Health Science Academy. Students will also have the opportunity to sit for the PTCB Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam after meeting the benchmark requirements.

Certified Pharmacy Technician

PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technicians (CPhTs) support pharmacists in delivering patient care in a variety of settings, including community pharmacies, hospitals, and other facilities. Although CPhTs typically support the medication dispensing process, the legal scope of practice for CPhTs is defined by individual State Boards of Pharmacy.

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to increase more than 9% between 2012 and 2022. The BLS suggests that pharmacy technicians with formal education or training, previous work experience and national certification will be specifically sought after to meet these demands.
