CLINIC GUIDELINES

WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the Texas Department of State Health Services, and RRISD recommend that students be kept home from school if any of the following conditions exist:

IMMUNIZATIONS

Please send updated immunizations to the clinic. District and state policy mandate that students be excluded from school until all vaccines are current.

MEDICATIONS

Do not send medications in with your student.  An adult needs to drop off and pick up all medications. A written request to administer medications must be completed by the parent for all medications, both prescription and over-the-counter. A Request to Administer Medication form must be completed (The form can be found in the Medical Forms link above).

Short-term medications (antibiotics, prescription eye drops.) must have a written doctor order to be administered at school. Cough drops are considered medication. Please do not send cough drops in your student's backpack. Cough drops need to be kept in the clinic with proper documentation on file.

CRUTCHES AND WHEELCHAIRS AT SCHOOL

Crutches and wheelchairs are considered medical devices, and will need to have a doctor's order. Please fax, email, or hand-deliver the order to the clinic the first day your student returns to school with the device. Elevator passes are available if needed. Contact the nurse if you need more information.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

Please report all communicable diseases to the clinic. This information is useful in helping to prevent the spread of illness in the school. Examples include strep throat, chickenpox, pink eye, impetigo, and scarlet fever.

SCREENINGS

State-mandated screening are as follows:

Vision/Hearing - PK, Kinder, 1st, 3rd, 5th, plus new students in 2nd and 4th grades

Acanthosis Nigricans - 1st, 3rd, 5th, plus new students in 2nd and 4th grades

Spinal - 5th grade girls

Screenings may also be requested by school staff on non-mandated grades.  Please see the student handbook for details.

CLOTHES CLOSET

If you need help with clothing for your student, please stop by the clinic to receive a referral form. All requests are confidential.

PK, K, 1st & 2nd Please assure that your child bring a changes of clothes in their backpack in case of accidents. This will prevent parents from making a trip to the school.
