K-5 RUBRIC – VISUAL ARTS

Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade

Participates in activities: 

Met Standard (MS) - Listens critically and participates in the art class projects/discussions and demonstrates new insight/solutions to the presented art problem.

Approaching Standard (AS) - Listens and participates in all of the art class projects/discussions.

Limited Progress (LP) - Listens and participates in the art class with occasional reminders or redirection.

No Assessment (X) - Student has not engaged or participated in elementary visual arts coursework and appropriate assessment cannot be made.

Kindergarten demonstrates concepts and skills:

Met Standard (MS)-Independently applies and expresses their understanding of the art elements-line, color, shape, texture, form, repetition/pattern, balance, and emphasis in all of their personal artwork.

Approaching Standard (AS)-Able to use a variety of materials to consistently apply the art elements-line, color, shape, texture, form, repetition/pattern, balance, and emphasis in all of their personal artwork and art discussions.

Limited Progress (LP)-Applies the art elements-line, color, shape, texture, form, repetition/pattern, balance, and emphasis in their personal artwork and art discussions with minimal to direct guidance.

No Assessment (X) - Student has not engaged or participated in elementary visual arts coursework and appropriate assessment cannot be made.

First Grade demonstrates concepts and skills:

Limited Progress (LP)-Applies the art elements-color, form, texture, space, composition, and movement/rhythm in their personal artwork and art discussions with minimal to direct guidance.

No Assessment (X) - Student has not engaged or participated in elementary visual arts coursework and appropriate assessment cannot be made.

Third Grade, Fourth Grade and Fifth Grade

Participates in activities:

E (Excellent): Listens critically and participates in the art class projects/discussions and demonstrates new insight/solutions to the presented art problem.

N (Needs Improvement): Inconsistently listens and participates in the art class with the help of  reminders and/or redirection.
U (Unsatisfactory): Listens and participates minimally in the art class with consistent reminders and redirections. Incomplete assignments present in gradebook.

NG (No Grade) - Student has not engaged or participated in elementary visual arts coursework and appropriate assessment cannot be made.

Third Grade demonstrates concepts and skills:

E (Excellent): Independently applies and expresses their understanding of the art elements-value, color, unity, proportion, form and space in all of their personal artwork while employing the concepts of stories, symbols and observation.

S (Satisfactory): Consistently demonstrates the use of a variety of materials to apply the art elements-value, color, unity, proportion, form and space in all of their personal artwork and art discussions while employing the concepts of stories, symbols and observation.
N (Needs Improvement): Inconsistently demonstrates the use of a variety of materials to apply the art elements-value, color, unity, proportion, form and space in all of their personal artwork and art discussions.  Inconsistently pursues understanding of the concepts of stories, symbols and observation.

U (Unsatisfactory): Does not demonstrate the use of a variety of materials to apply the art elements-value, color, unity, proportion, form and space in all of their personal artwork and art discussions even with direct guidance.  Does not pursue understanding of the concepts of stories, symbols and observation.

NG (No Grade) - Student has not engaged or participated in elementary visual arts coursework and appropriate assessment cannot be made.

Fourth Grade demonstrates concepts and skills:

S (Satisfactory): Consistently demonstrates the use of a variety of materials to apply the art elements-value, space, color, contrast, form and balance in all of their personal artwork and art discussions while employing the concepts of change and perspective.
N (Needs Improvement): Inconsistently demonstrates the use of a variety of materials to apply the art elements-value, space, color, contrast, form and balance in all of their personal artwork and art discussions.  Inconsistently pursues understanding of the concepts of change and perspective..

U (Unsatisfactory): Does not demonstrate the use of a variety of materials to apply the art elements-value, space, color, contrast, form and balance in all of their personal artwork and art discussions even with direct guidance.  Does not pursue understanding of the concepts of change and perspective.
