The goal of health screening is to identify and refer students with potential underlying medical problems. Early detection and intervention is key to decreasing the negative effects of health problems on learning.
The State of Texas mandates some screenings during the elementary school years:
Hearing and Vision
Hearing and Vision screens are done students in PK, Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades, all students new to RRISD, and those in special services
AN (Acanthosis Nigricans) Risk Assessment for Type 2 Diabetes
Acanthosis Nigricans (AN) is a skin discoloration that may indicate high levels of insulin in the blood. Assessment screening for Type 2 Diabetes and AN (Acanthosis Nigricans) is done for all 1st, 3rd, and 5th graders and students new to RRISD (as age appropriate).
Spinal/Scoliosis
All 5th grade girls will be screened.
