Meet the Teacher

Welcome to 3rd grade and the learning community of Mrs. Jones and the Argonauts! I’m Sajen Jones and this will be my 4th year teaching at Laurel Mountain. I believe that true learning comes from students being engaged in authentic contexts and inquiry, so I am grateful to work in a school that offers many amazing spaces and opportunities! 

Why Argonauts? The word itself means ‘sailors of the ship Argo’ and originates from the Greek myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece.  This epic tale revolves around a group of heroes who set sail on the ship Argo to find the Golden Fleece. They fight beasts, face obstacles they never expected, and learn that they could not survive the journey without the support of one another. Just like the Argonauts, we all face challenges, make mistakes, and have unique interests and strengths.  In our classroom community, we each face different stumbling blocks, but are all on the same journey. Facing our own giants takes practice, resilience and support. As a teacher, my philosophy is to create an empathetic, empowered community of learners who will support each other in our efforts.

A little about me: I grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee and spent my time hiking, swimming, dancing, and exploring the Great Smoky Mountains with my friends and family. I moved to Fairfax, Virginia to attend George Mason University and received my undergraduate degree in Dance Performance with a focus in Pedagogy. I spent 2 years dancing professionally in Chicago, Illinois before moving to Cincinnati, Ohio with my husband, Lucas Jones. There, I worked as the Artistic Director of a new dance studio and taught ballet, modern, jazz, and tap to all ages. It was during this time that I discovered my passion for working with young minds. Lucas and I then took a leap and relocated to Austin where I began my certification in education program through Region 13, and began substitute teaching in Austin ISD.  I taught 5th graders for two years at LME, and last year I taught 3rd grade. I feel so blessed to continue my journey with 3rd grade this year!

In my spare time I love to travel and explore new places. On the weekends you can find me hiking, paddle boarding, swimming, and riding bikes around Austin. I also love puzzles and sitting on my porch with a good book. 

I look forward to partnering with your family and having a successful year of learning, laughing, and making new memories. ​Third grade is going to be fabulous!
