  • read a selection of choices independently and make meaningful connections to other texts.
  • write a focused, well- organized personal or nonfiction narrative.

  • prepare and present a nonfiction narrative.
  • set goals for the unit and reflect upon his/her learning from the unit.

Unit 2: Learning from History

Students will be able to...

  • read selections that offer multiple perspectives on historical events and develop their own point of view.
  • understand and use academic vocabulary words related to informational texts.
  • recognize elements of different genres, especially dramas, graphic novels, and nonfiction.
  • read a selection of my choice independently and make meaningful connections to other texts.
  • write a thoughtful, fact-based informational essay.
  • complete timed writing tasks with confidence.
  • prepare and deliver an oral report.
  • set goals for the unit and reflect upon his/her learning from the unit.

Unit 3: What Matters

Students will be able to...

  • read selections that express different points of view about taking a stand and develop his/her own perspective.
  • understand and use academic vocabulary related to argument.
  • recognize elements of different genres, especially arguments, fantasy, and short stories.
  • read a selection of his/her choice independently and make meaningful connections to other texts.
  • write a focused, well organized editorial.
  • complete Timed Writing tasks with confidence.
  • prepare and deliver an oral argument.
  • set goals for the unit and reflect upon his/her learning from the unit.

Unit 4: Human Intelligence

Students will be able to...

  • read informational selections about the human brain and reflect.
  • understand and use academic vocabulary words related to research.
  • recognize elements of different genres, especially science fiction, science articles, and reference sources.
  • read a selection of my choice independently and make meaningful connections to other texts.
  • write a well-documented and focused research paper.
  • complete timed writing tasks with confidence.
  • conduct a research-based discussion.

Unit 5: Pushing Boundaries

Students will be able to...

  • read selections that express different points of view about inventions and inventors.
  • understand and use academic vocabulary words related to reading selections.
  • recognize elements of different genres: personal narratives, myths, magical realism, feature articles, and historical fiction.
  • read a selection of my choice independently and make meaningful connections to other texts.
  • paraphrase and summarize information from various genres.
  • make connections and inferences among texts.
  • write a focused, well-organized short story.
  • complete Timed Writing tasks with confidence.
  • use test-taking and reading strategies on a STAAR-like assessment.

Unit 6: Voice & Choice

Students will be able to...

  • write a literary response essay
  • write a short response to literary and expository text
  • analyze paired selections/ synthesize information
  • use text evidence to support ideas about text
  • produce a multimedia presentation (unit 3 or 6)
  • develop a plan for researching information (complete in unit 3 or 6)
