Newbery Awards CHallenge

The Newbery Award Challenge

I have issued a challenge to my team, The Mars Generation. The challenge is to get to as close to Mars as possible through reading Newbery Award books.

  • Mastery of the books can be shown either through meeting with a partner frequently to discuss the book (highly recommended), take a book quiz (if made available) and other options discussed with me.

  • You may not use a book that you have already read. However, if you took a book from the library within the last two weeks AFTER I spoke to you about this challenge, that will count. Hats off to you for being proactive!

  • The info below is taken from NASA's Mars Exploration website.

  • See the list of Newbery Award books by year or by genre.

Flyby missions include: Mariner 3-4 | Mariner 6-7

Orbiter (3 books)

As our knowledge and technologies grew, we began putting spacecraft in orbit around Mars for longer term, global studies.

Orbital missions include:Mariner 8-9 | Viking 1-2 | Mars Observer | Mars Global Surveyor | Mars Climate Orbiter | 2001 Mars Odyssey| Mars Express | Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter | Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution | NASA In ESA's ExoMars Orbiter

Landed missions include: Viking 1-2 | Pathfinder | Polar Lander/Deep Space 2

Rover (5 books)

Today, we're not only landing in one place, but have shown that we can be mobile on the surface of Mars. | Mars Exploration Rovers | Phoenix | Mars Science Laboratory | InSight | NASA In ESA's ExoMars Rover | 2020 Mission Plans

Airplanes (6 books)

We may send craft that can study the planet from a perspective we've never achieved before: soaring views from the Martian sky.

Subsurface Explorers (7 books)

Going below the ground will tell us more about the geology of the planet, the presence of water, and maybe even clues about whether Mars was ever a habitat for life.
