The week of October 26-30, 2020 is Red Ribbon Week, a week when Canyon Creek focuses on living healthy. We have planned five fun "living healthy" spirit days to promote living safe, healthy, happy lives and making healthy choices! Students are encouraged to participate whether they are virtual or on-campus learners. To go along with Red Ribbon Week, families are encouraged to design a paper Healthy Pumpkin by writing or drawing ways their family lives a healthy, happy lifestyle on the paper pumpkin found here! Families can email these to Ellie Qu, our Family Support Specialist so they can be displayed. Let's have a fun Red Ribbon Week!

Report Cards will be coming soon:

Please remember that the report card is a reflection of your child and it is unfair to compare your child’s report card to another child’s report card. With social distancing protocols, some components of traditional learning are more difficult. The restriction of close proximity makes it difficult to get a clear picture of every skill when comparing what our traditional learning classroom looks like.

The RRISD Primary Report Card is a standards-based continuum, meaning that progress is reported on the knowledge and skills your child is expected to master at each grade level. The continuum is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)

An “X” in a Performance Level indicates an area that has not been assessed.

Performance Level LP is Limited Progress towards Standard. An LP means a kindergarten student needs extra help with this area.

Performance Level AS is Approaching Standard. AS means your child is making progress and is right where they need to be. Expect to see mostly AS for the first, second and third nine weeks.

Performance Level MS Met Standard. MS means exit level for end of kindergarten expectations.

For every indicator, there may be three to ten bulleted statements that describe what students need to know and be able to do. Due to the large quantity of descriptors, reaching MS exit level takes time.

You should expect to see MS at the end of the year on the 4th 9 weeks report card.

Please keep in mind that this is a year long journey with much to learn from quarter to quarter. As students develop independence as learners, we increase the complexity of skills and concepts to further each child’s knowledge.

Report Cards will come through HAC (Home Access Center)

If you need support accessing the HAC, please contact Mrs. Quesnel, our registrar, for assistance. Her email is cynthia_quesnel@roundrockisd.org

In HAC, go to the "Grades" tab, then "Report Card" tab, then "print".

HUTTENHOWER HAPPENINGS

News for the week of Jan. 20th

NO SCHOOL MONDAY, Jan. 20th MLK Holiday

This week was very wet! I could tell my students really missed our normal outside recess time. I’m hoping for some sunshine soon!

On Tuesday, Mrs. Hougham came to our class to teach a lesson about listening. The class did a wonderful job giving her their attention.

In math we finished up measurement and took an assessment that went home. We began our unit on understanding addition. We are using double ten frames and magnetic foam circle counters to show how many of each item in a picture and adding the 2 amounts. After showing the 2 separate amounts I’m asking students to prove their answer by sliding the counters together and looking at the amount filling 1 of the 10 frames. We are also continuing to practice previous skills during our math station rotations.

In Language Arts we finished up our Penguin books. We read a book about technology past and present about home and school. We also read a poem about a Little Piggy named Bob.

We are reviewing handwriting. We practiced Aa and Bb. We used water, paint sponges and little chalkboards to practice and then we practiced on paper.

We got new little readers for our book boxes. We are working on doing a picture walk, asking questions before reading, “I wonder what’s going to happen to the…?” Reading the words, retelling and making connections. Each student also picked out a sight word to write on the board. We all practiced the sight word “not”.

We practiced all the letters and letter sounds and used these to write about our winter break. Tomorrow we will read about Martin Luther King, Jr. and we will write about our own dreams.

In Science we looked at water samples from the faucet and from a birdbath. We wrote about the differences in our science journal. We also wrote and drew pictures about different ways people use water in our everyday lives.

BOOK BAGS: Please return book bags tomorrow so I can get them ready for next week.

NEEDS:

Erasers:Please send in a box of little end cap erasers if you can. Our pencils will last a lot longer if we can put those little cap erasers on the end when the eraser is gone. Plus the kids love the colors! THANK YOU to Rishi and Steven’s families for sending some in already!

SUPERSTAR: No Superstar this week!

HUTTENHOWER HAPPENINGS

We will celebrate our 100th day of school on Friday, January 31st.

We have planned a fun day where the children will experience 100 through many different activities. We will have a 100th day parade right after the announcements that you are invited to watch in the hallway. Please sign in at the office with a valid driver's license or ID first to get a visitor’s badge.

To help us visualize what 100 objects look like, we are asking that each child decorate a plain t-shirt (any color) with 100 items on it. Since we never know what the weather might be here in Texas, we are asking that if it is cold, for the children to either wear a long sleeve shirt or wear one under a short sleeve shirt. Some ideas to use as decorations are stickers, googly eyes, fabric paint, buttons, pom-poms, safety pins, stamps, etc. Be creative! The lighter weight the item, the easier it is to glue, stick, or attach 100 things to the shirt. Please also remember that your child will be wearing the 100 things all day (it will get very uncomfortable to wear 100 heavy things like pennies or crayons on a t-shirt.) Have fun creating any shirt that you would like with 100 items on it. Please have your child wear their shirt on Friday, January 31st as we celebrate the 100th day of school!

There are a wide variety of ideas for 100th day of school shirts on Pinterest.

THIS WEEK AT A GLANCE:

Monday started the week with Enrichment Day full of Lots of fun and activities as the kindergarten students rotated to 4 classes led by our 2 TAG teachers, the librarian and our technology specialist. What a treat to get to work with these amazing teachers! Students made masks, capes, videos and programmed robotic spheros!

We learned the names of some new shapes to include: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, trapezoid, rhombus and hexagon. We also continued to practice counting and writing numbers at our math stations.

In Science we continued learning about the day and night sky, focusing on clouds. We had an assessment that will be coming home in the Tuesday folder.

In science we continued to observe and record weather patterns. We learned about how the weather affects our choice of clothes. Today we built structures to protect a little toy person from the sun. Some of our structures worked. Some didn’t. But we talked about how that’s okay! Even grown-up scientists need to make adjustments to their work to make it better.

In reading and writing, we practiced the letters Ff Gg and Hh. We responded to literature by talking with partners about things we noticed in the story, our favorite part, our feelings and what we wonder about. We related stories to our own lives for text to self connections. Our sight word for the week was “see”.

FIELD TRIP

Second grade will be going to the Austin Nature Center on Thursday, April 25 for an exciting day of animal exploration. What a great opportunity to see firsthand what we just recently focused on in Science. We have spent a lot of time discussing and observing different animal body structures and functions. We will have a chance to get up close and personal with lots of animals on this field trip.

Please remember to send your child with a sack lunch on this day and dressed in a CCE shirt (if you have one) and closed toed shoes.

Thank you to our many parent chaperones who will be going on the field trip. If you would like to attend, please let me know. I have to turn in my list of chaperones beforehand. Here is my current volunteer list: Jennifer Halla, Tara Hernandez, Elizabeth Steinheider, Cheng Wooster (I will be sending an email with more details during the week.)

Also, if anyone has a rolling cooler that we can borrow, please let me know.

Thank you!

Week of April 15

IT’S SHOW TIME!

Please remember that our second grade performance, “Lemonade”, is this Tuesday, April 16, following the PTA meeting which begins at 6:00 pm. Students should be in the Music Room no later than 5:55 pm that evening. The show will start as soon as the PTA meeting has been adjourned.

We hope to have 100% participation on Tuesday evening. Every student plays an important part in our musical! As always, please remember, for the safety of our children, to park your vehicle in the designated areas and not on our driveway. By the time the program is over, it will be dark, and we want to avoid any problems with little ones walking to their cars. The children have worked so hard on this program and you will be delighted with the results. How fortunate we are to have Mrs. Debbie Martin as our Music teacher. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

MONDAY 7:20 AM REHEARSAL: Kingsley, Antonio, Justin, Gio, Clay, Brett, Marvin, Ava, David, Eve Julia, Emerson, Kaden, Akshara, Josephine

TUESDAY 7:20 AM REHEARSAL: Akshara, Josephine, Kingsley, Eve, Julia, Emerson, Clay

COOKIES AND LEMONADE

From our music teacher, Debbie Martin:

Your children suggested serving lemonade to all who attend the "Lemonade" musical, and what goes better with lemonade than cookies? So, I am asking for families to volunteer to bring two dozen cookies to share on Tuesday, February 16th. Please complete the Google Form if you are able to provide two dozen cookies to share AND/OR if you can help serve the lemonade and cookies that evening.

LOVE LEGOS? FUN VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Hello parents! Robolab is coming up for your child, and we could use some parent volunteers. For those of you new to Robolab, Robolab is a PTA-sponsored program that teaches every child in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades about science, computer programming, and teamwork using Lego equipment. In second grade, the children will learn about different types of energy and will be making simple machines that show how energy works. We can use some help from parents to encourage the kids and maintain focus. You do not need to know anything about science or Legos to help; just be encouraging! And come see what your kids are up to!

A sign up link will be made available in the coming weeks, but you may want to mark your calendar. Our class will be attending the Robolab sessions on Monday, May 6 (from 7:55-8:55 am) and Wednesday, May 8 (9:00 - 10 am).

If you hope to volunteer, you must be in the RRISD Raptor System. If you have not filled out an application to volunteer this year yet, please go to the CCE website (www.canyoncreek.roundrockisd.org). Scroll down to bottom and click the “Volunteer Information” link. Please allow at least five days to have your application processed. If you have any problems with filling out this application, please call the school office.

COMETS FIELD DAY T-SHIRTS!

Order forms have been sent home for Comets Field Day shirts! This year's shirt is cardinal red with a Comet design in white, gray, and black. Stop by the CCE Office to see sample shirts and check sizing. The deadline for ordering the shirts is April 17th. The proceeds from the sale of t- shirts helps pay for the water slides for Field Day. The Essentials teachers thank you for your support!

STUDENT COUNCIL COMMUNITY PROJECT

From April 8-18, the Canyon Creek Student Council will be hosting a donation drive to benefit Texas Humane Heroes, an animal shelter for dogs and cats in our area. Pay It Forward runs until March 15.

As a foster parent, Mrs. Dobbins can speak to the benefit that donations like these provide for children in CPS care. The donations to the Rainbow Room allow caseworkers to bring items with a foster child when placing them in a new home. Many children come with only the clothes on their backs.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

Our Project Based Learning project to celebrate and appreciate the seniors in our community and lives was a huge success. The students shared stories of smiles, hugs, and many acts of service. Throughout this unit, students were able to think about and understand a specific community of friends among us, and we worked hard to understand the feelings of others. Young and Young at Heart came together to share stories, hold a warm hand, and share a smile. Sometimes we forget how powerful the gift of time and service can be

It's amazing how a simple act of kindness can have such a profound impact on so many! The best news of all is that it doesn't have to end here. Take some time continue these acts of service to other people. Thank you for supporting our vision, and remember to always stay -- Young at Heart!

Stay tuned for our final product coming soon!

SWEETS AND LOVE

Thank you to all who helped with our Valentine’s Day party. A Extra big thank you to Jolie, our room mom, for planning the party! The celebration included ice cream sundaes, opening of Valentine’s Day cards, and a lively game of Valentine Bingo. We ended the celebration with a slide show of our Young at Heart project. We were all showered with cards, chocolates, and delicious treats. Thank you all for my cards with sweet sentiments, yummy treats, beautiful flowers and love!

YOUNG AND YOUNG AT HEART

This past week, we have been looking at the older community of Grand-friends around us. We have read about nursing homes, discussed neighbors, thought about the people we see in public, and have tried to internalize how they may think and feel. Towards the end of the week, we posed the question, “What can you do when it comes to the “young at heart” in our community?” The students came up with a powerful list of ideas and creative gestures to show friendship and love. Now, the challenge is on!

Students have challenged themselves to each do one act of kindness towards a Grand-friend in our community or to their own grandparent/ great-grandparent. This could be making a card , baking cookies for a neighbor, holding the door for someone at a restaurant, inviting a grandparent or grand-friend to a meal, drawing a picture, making a gift., visiting, calling or performing for a grandparent or grandfriend. Our challenge went a step further as students will take a picture of themselves either creating the gesture or completing the act. Challenges and pictures are due by Wednesday, February 13th. We will be thinking of a creative way to share all of the pictures with parents.

Please feel free to email the picture to me, rather than printing them at home.

VALENTINE’S DAY BAGS

Valentine’s bags and a class list were sent home several weeks ago. I hope your children have been thinking of a creative way to decorate their bag.

If your child hasn’t started on their bag, now is the time! Bags are due in class on Monday, February 11th. Valentine cards may be brought to school starting on that same date. Please be sure your child prepares a Valentine card for every student in the class. Since Valentine's Day is a party day, your child may attach a small piece of candy or treat to their Valentine cards.
