FLUTTERING WINGS

We ordered live caterpillars from insectlore.com a couple of weeks ago to use as a resource to explore insect life cycles. The children were delighted and awed as we observed our caterpillars throughout the day while they ate and plumped up, preparing for their next stage of life, of being a pupa. This is the stage in which they form a chrysalis and prepare to become butterflies. The children and I found such wonder in observing our caterpillars as they emerged from their chrysalis. Then we were treated to the sights and sounds of fluttering wings as we work on our assignments.

Our final step was a few weeks ago, as we released these beautiful butterflies into nature. It was a thrilling experience for all of us. I would definitely encourage you to order a set of live butterflies for your home experience. It’s a two to three week process and the children are immediately entranced by the life cycles unfolding right before their eyes. These live butterflies are $17.99 or $27.99 for the butterflies and butterfly garden (their home). Here’s the website I used to place the order, http://www.insectlore.com/. Have fun!

2ND GRADE SHOWCASE

Thank you for coming to our Second Grade Showcase! I hope you were impressed by your child's hard work, the progress they have made this year, and the many ways they have grown as learners and classmates.

We are hosting our annual Comet Kick-Off for our new Kindergarten students on Wednesday, May 8th from 8:00-9:30 a.m. Students will visit our kindergarten classrooms and do a variety of fun activities. At the same time, parents will meet in the cafeteria to learn what to expect in the coming year. We look forward to welcoming our new students and parents!

FIELD TRIP

Second grade will be going to the Austin Nature Center on Thursday, April 25 for an exciting day of animal exploration. What a great opportunity to see firsthand what we just recently focused on in Science. We have spent a lot of time discussing and observing different animal body structures and functions. We will have a chance to get up close and personal with lots of animals on this field trip.

Please remember to send your child with a sack lunch on this day and dressed in a CCE shirt (if you have one) and closed toed shoes.

Thank you to our parent chaperones who will be going on the field trip. If you would like to attend, please let me know. I have to turn in my list of chaperones beforehand.

Also, we need a couple of rolling coolers to bring our lunches to our picnic area. Please email me if you have one we could borrow for the day. When the coolers roll, the chaperones have a much more enjoyable day! Thank you!

IT’S SHOW TIME!

Please remember that our second grade performance, “Lemonade”, is this Tuesday, April 16, following the PTA meeting which begins at 6:00 pm. Students should be in the Music Room no later than 5:55pm that evening. The show will start as soon as the PTA meeting has been adjourned.

We hope to have 100% participation on Tuesday evening. Every student plays an important part in our musical! As always, please remember, for the safety of our children, to park your vehicle in the designated areas and not on our driveway. By the time the program is over, it will be dark, and we want to avoid any problems with little ones walking to their cars. The children have worked so hard on this program and you will be delighted with the results. How fortunate we are to have Mrs. Debbie Martin as our Music teacher. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

COOKIES AND LEMONADE

From our music teacher, Debbie Martin:

Your children suggested serving lemonade to all who attend the "Lemonade" musical, and what goes better with lemonade than cookies? So, I am asking for families to volunteer to bring two dozen cookies to share on Tuesday, February 16th. Please complete the Google Form if you are able to provide two dozen cookies to share AND/OR if you can help serve the lemonade and cookies that evening.

LOVE LEGOS? FUN VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Hello parents! Robolab is coming up for your child, and we could use some parent volunteers. For those of you new to Robolab, Robolab is a PTA-sponsored program that teaches every child in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades about science, computer programming, and teamwork using Lego equipment. In second grade, the children will learn about different types of energy and will be making simple machines that show how energy works. We can use some help from parents to encourage the kids and maintain focus. You do not need to know anything about science or Legos to help; just be encouraging! And come see what your kids are up to!

A sign up link will be made available in the coming weeks, but you may want to mark your calendar. Our class will be attending the Robolab sessions on Monday, April 29 (from 7:55-8:55am) and Monday, May 6 (from 1:15pm-2:15pm).

If you hope to volunteer, you must be in the RRISD Raptor System. If you have not filled out an application to volunteer this year yet, please go to the CCE website (www.canyoncreek.roundrockisd.org). Scroll down to bottom and click the “Volunteer Information” link. Please allow at least five days to have your application processed. If you have any problems with filling out this application, please call the school office.

The CCE Singing Stars Choir will perform the National Anthem Sunday, April 28th at 1:05 p.m. at the Round Rock Express baseball game. We have reserved a large block of infield reserved seat tickets in Section 113 for the game at a discounted rate of $12.00 per ticket. (There is an extra charge for parking at the stadium) Sundays are Kids Days, so there are several activities at the stadium geared toward kids. The RR Express uses Groupmatics for group sales now so your ticket purchases will be easy and online. To purchase tickets go here. We hope to have a large CCE presence at the game!

We were told by the Express staff that CCE Singing Stars Choir is the only group that has performed the National Anthem ALL 20 years of their existence! Quite a tradition!

HOMEWORK

Your child will be given a folktale homework assignment on Monday. This assignment is due on Friday. If you have any questions after seeing the assignment directions, please email. The time reading and practicing the story should be counted in your child's reading minutes each night.

SPRING FEVER

With increased frequency we’ve been hearing, “Oops, I forgot” when collecting homework, planners, and reading logs. We still have about nine more weeks of school, and we need each of our students to be present and prepared for the day. Please continue to make school a priority even in the busy days of spring sports and outdoor activities. Be sure to check planners and for homework nightly.

Each and every student should be reading a minimum of 60 minutes a week. We need to see that you are reading at home, practicing your strategies independently, and working to become a better reader in and out of school.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

Our Project Based Learning project to celebrate and appreciate the seniors in our community and lives was a huge success. The students shared stories of smiles, hugs, and many acts of service. Throughout this unit, students were able to think about and understand a specific community of friends among us, and we worked hard to understand the feelings of others. Young and Young at Heart came together to share stories, hold a warm hand, and share a smile. Sometimes we forget how powerful the gift of time and service can be

It's amazing how a simple act of kindness can have such a profound impact on so many! The best news of all is that it doesn't have to end here. Take some time continue these acts of service to other people. Thank you for supporting our vision, and remember to always stay -- Young at Heart!

Stay tuned for our final product coming soon!

SWEETS AND LOVE

Thank you to all who helped with our Valentine’s Day party. The celebration included ice cream sundaes, a lively game of Valentine Bingo. We started with the opening of Valentine’s Day cards—always the highlight of the celebration. We were all showered with cards, chocolates, and delicious treats. Thank you all for my cards with sweet sentiments, yummy treats, and love!

NEW STUDENT

On Wednesday, we will be welcoming a new student to our class. His name is David Jiao. The class is excited to have him join us.

By the way, Alex has moved but not very far away. His contact information remains the same. I know he would love to hear from his friends from Canyon Creek.

YOUNG AND YOUNG AT HEART

This past week, we have been looking at the older community of Grand-friends around us. We have read about nursing homes, discussed neighbors, thought about the people we see in public, and have tried to internalize how they may think and feel. Towards the end of the week, we posed the question, “What can you do when it comes to the “young at heart” in our community?” The students came up with a powerful list of ideas and creative gestures to show friendship and love. Now, the challenge is on!

Students have challenged themselves to each do one act of kindness towards a Grand-friend in our community. This could be a card for a grandparent, baking cookies for a neighbor, holding the door for someone at a restaurant, inviting a grandparent or grand-friend to lunch on Valentine’s Day, or drawing a picture and leaving it on someone’s doorstep. Our challenge went a step further as students will take a picture of themselves either creating the gesture or completing the act. Challenges and pictures are due by Wednesday, February 13th. We will be thinking of a creative way to share all of the pictures with parents.

Please feel free to email the picture to me, rather than printing them at home.

VALENTINE’S DAY BAGS

Valentine’s bags and a class list were sent home several weeks ago. I hope your children have been thinking of a creative way to decorate their bag.

Please be sure your child prepares a Valentine card for every student in the class. IMPORTANT HEALTH MESSAGE

We are still seeing many cases of the stomach bug, strep and other illnesses. Thank you for being mindful of the “24 hour rule”! This rule is: students must be fever-free and symptom-free for 24 hours, without medication, before returning to school. We are doing everything in our power to keep our building as clean as possible, as well as encouraging frequent hand washing. Hopefully together we can prevent the spread of these germs.
