Science - Setting up for Science: This unit focuses on developing students' skills in Scientific Inquiry and Engineering Practices. It introduces them to the practices, themes, and routines they will be using throughout the year-all in the context of how space travel has impacted science and society. It encourages active exploration, investigation, and problem-solving while fostering safe and ethical practices in the laboratory and beyond. Students will engage in hands-on experiments, data collection, and model development to deepen their understanding of scientific concepts and engineering design principles. They will also explore the impact of science and innovative solutions on society and investigate STEM careers for future inspiration.
Math - Place Value and Decimals: Students extend their understanding of the base ten system to include decimals up to the thousandths place. They review the relationships between adjacent places on the place value chart and explore how multiplying and dividing by multiples of 10 affects the value of digits in decimal fractions. Students progress to naming decimal fractions in expanded and word forms, compare decimal fractions using like-units, and generalize their knowledge of rounding from whole numbers to decimal numbers. As the module progresses, students apply their understanding to decimal operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They utilize both conceptual models and standard algorithms to solidify their skills.
ELAR - Launching Literacy Routines: In this unit, fifth graders will revisit important literacy routines; by fifth-grade students have experience with the routines and this unit sets the expectations for the year. This unit revisits and establishes the importance of collaboration, independent reading/writing, goal setting, the importance of stamina, and engagement in reading and writing, and sets up reading response routines. This unit reinstates the importance of the writer’s notebook and reader’s notebook tools and allows students time to set up and begin to build ideas in their new notebooks for the school year.
SS - Thinking like a Geographer: In this unit, students will deepen their geographic literacy by examining both the physical and human geography of the United States. Building upon foundational knowledge from previous grades, this unit extends students' understanding of how geographical features influence historical and current events in the United States. Through this exploration, students will not only describe the physical and economic landscapes of the U.S. but also analyze how these landscapes interact with social and political elements. This comprehensive approach is designed to prepare students to connect geographic factors with broader national developments, enabling them to appreciate the complex interplay between environment and human activity. Additionally, students will continue to apply this geographical lens as they explore different periods in United States history throughout the fifth grade, further integrating their understanding of geography with historical contexts and events.
