Course Description
The curriculum of this Advanced Chinese II class is designed to prepare students for Chinese III advanced or Chinese IB-SL First Year. To maximize students' learning effectiveness, students are expected to take this course very seriously and they are encouraged to fully engaged and participate with all the learning activities in an immersion environment in class. Approximately 80 - 90% of instructional time in this course is in Chinese. The other 10 - 20 % of instructional time of is in English for the purpose of clear description and explanation of grammar rules, assignment rubrics and new vocabularies
Besides emphasizing students' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, this course also emphasizes students’ efficiency and accuracy in Chinese typing. Chinese cultural studies are also included in the curriculum to strengthen students' multicultural awareness in the teaching and learning process.

HOMEWORK POLICY
Homework contributes to mastery of curriculum objectives and prepares students for successful performance in class, quiz and test. All students need to complete the assignments independently, correctly and thoroughly before the due day. If the student has a question about a particular assignment, he or she is encouraged to come in during flex period for help.
Paper based homework is DUE at the beginning of the next class meet. The teacher will college the homework within 5 minutes after the beginning bell. Online homework is DUE AT THE designated due day and time. 10 points deducted each school day.
Some of the homework may count as Daily grade. The teacher has all the right to make a decision which category a homework count as. However, no matter what categories homework will be, it will follow the same late work policy
Absent Work:
The student is responsible for checking and getting the absent work (which is located in the RED folder on the wall next to the big whiteboard).
The student is responsible for making up the work within 5 school days upon return.
Students need to make up absent tests or quizzes, students within 5 school days or before the next test or quiz is given.
Late Work Policy:
Work that is not turned in on the due day will receive 10 points per school day penalty. And late work is not qualified for re-do or lower grade makeup.
1 day late: maximum score 90
2 days late: maximum score 80
3 days late: maximum score 70
4 days late: maximum score 60
5 days late: maximum score 50
Any work that is past due for 5 days will receive zero as the grade (no re-do or lower grade make up allowed)
Re-do /Retake Policy:
About Test/Quiz:
A student who receives a grade lower than 70 on a test or a quiz is strongly encouraged to re-take for a maximum grade up to 70 within 5 school days after the failing grade is received.
About Assignment/Homework:
If a work that has been turned in on time, received a grade lower than 70, the teacher will mark RE_DO on the paper and attaché a new copy of work or un-submit the online work to encourage the student to re-do it for a maximum grade up to 70. However, it is up to the student's decision. Re-do is additional assignment for the student, it must be turned in at the beginning of the next class meet.
ELECTRONIC AND TECHNOLOGIES
About cellphones
Students need to turn off their phone and put it in the designated pocket in the cellphone caddy on the wall. Teacher will use that as reference to check the attendance at the beginning of the class.
If a student keeps a second phone in the backpack. When the phone goes off or the student is caught on using the phone, the teacher will confiscate the phone first, and then write a referral for dishonesty and violation of the classroom cellphone policy.
About earphone or earbuds
Students need to take their earphone or earbuds off and turn them off and put in their backpack upon entering the class.
About other types of electronic devices:
Students must use school assigned Chrome book for any online assessment. Failing to bring a school assigned Chromebook will result not able to take the assessment, a zero will be given. Re-take the assessment for a maximum grade of 70.
Without teacher’s permission, students are not allowed to take notes, read or type on any electronic devices.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
Cheating takes many forms. Any attempt to receive credit for work that the student has not done, or has not done with an honest attempt to understand the concepts involved, is cheating. This applies to individual work and to group assignments. If a student is caught cheating, a referral will be written and a parent contacted. If the cheating involves another subject, the appropriate teacher will be contacted, a referral given, and the parent contacted. All students involved will be given a zero on the assignment/test that the student cheated on. Both the student copying work and the individual giving assistance (if complicit) will receive zeroes. Academic integrity is an important value in the LOTE department and in our school.
1st offense
Parents/guardians will be contacted
Zero will be given for the work and a chance to re-do at a given time under the teacher’s supervision for the maximum of 70.
2nd offense
Parents/guardians will be contacted
AP will be contacted more discipline and referral
Recorded on student’s record and will affect their National Honor Society, School club officer elections and IB program
Class Participation:
Positive, class-orientated, voluntary oral participation is MANDATORY. The participation grade is a subjective grade based on the student's performance and behavior in every class. Students are expected to raise their hands and answer questions in Mandarin Chinese or in English as allowed by the teacher. If the student uses another language repeatedly without teacher’s approval, or comes to class unprepared, without material,
according to the school student behavior matrix, a warning will be given. Repeat offenses will receive a referral.
Classroom Rules
1. Follow the Westwood High School Student Accountability Matrix and Westwood LOTE Department Student
Behavior Accountability Plan.
2. Show respect to your peers, the teacher and the classroom (that includes respecting turns, requesting permission to talk, no inappropriate/offensive language and not damaging items in my classroom)
3. Be prepared with the required materials and turn in homework at the beginning of the class.
4. Not eat in the classroom. A water bottle with a lid may be brought to class.
5. Students should place their phones in the cell phone caddy and earbuds turned off in the student backpack upon entering the classroom.
6. Students must put Smart-watches in their backpacks during an assessment
7. Have a positive attitude
8. Be focused and participate in class activities no off task behaviors (such as sleep, work on assignment from other classes)
9. Restroom breaks or drinking weather should not be gone for more than 5 minutes

Course Description
In Chinese II class, students will focus on the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing (with references). It will teaches all the basics and intermediate students to function in Chinese by understand how the Chinese language works grammatically and how to use Chinese in real life. The Chinese II class adopted Easy Steps to Chinese Book 2 and 3as the textbook. The topics included in this second level class curriculum are travel, health, shopping, Home life. Teacher also will adopt the Chinese Made Easy to enrich students' learning. Students will listen, speak, read and write (basic writing only and most of the time references can be used) regularly and learn to express themselves, communicate and convey information with others in Mandarin Chinese on topics closely related to their own experiences and daily life. Students will explore culture through authentic materials, such as skits, games, videos and technology supplements to foster their language use.
