If you don't already have an instrument you have some choices for getting one:
The school may provide a rental instrument. Grisham has violas, cellos and basses that can be rented from the school (violins must be purchased or rented). Quality of these instruments is not guaranteed.
Music stores have instruments available for rental. Many retailers offer higher-end and newer instruments that still charge a low rental fee. Some companies even do rent-to-own programs.
You can purchase an instrument, but please ask the director for approval before purchasing.
If you are interested in purchasing an instrument please discuss the purchase with your private lesson teacher or Ms. Hornbake first. Please don’t purchase an instrument without having an experienced person play it first. You can’t rely on photographs or descriptions and there are many ‘violin shaped objects‘ available on sites like ebay that will be of substandard quality. They will be difficult to play, especially for a beginner who may be discouraged before they even get started. We are happy to help!
Basic coverage of instruments may be included in some cases by your homeowners insurance. It is best to call to find out if a separate insurance provider is needed for more expensive instruments and under what circumstances they are covered (theft, fire, damage), and what value is covered, if they will be depreciated or covered at replacement value. We recommend specialized instrument insurance. It isn’t expensive and is often more comprehensive. Anderson Musical Instrument Insurance Solutions, LLC is one many of our families use.
