About Me

My name is Mr. Douglass, and I am thrilled to be part of the Walsh Wildcat community – this is my 3rd year teaching Language Arts at Walsh. I graduated with a degree in English from Texas A&M University and a Master’s in Creative Writing from Vanderbilt University, where I also joined the faculty as a Lecturer in Literature and Writing. While I loved my time teaching college courses, I ultimately felt that I could make a bigger difference by helping secondary students as they develop the skills, habits, and attitudes necessary to succeed at the university level and into adulthood. I’ve had a blast working with the students of Walsh, and I can’t wait to get to know each of my Language Arts students this year!

My goal as a teacher is to apply the Walsh motto – “100% Growth” – every day to every student. In order to do that, students need to feel safe enough to take risks, so we try to approach mistakes as opportunities for growth. I hope to make class fun while maintaining high standards, with the aim that students leave each class meeting excited about the discipline of writing and with a deeper appreciation of the craft of our texts. More broadly, I aim to foster students' skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking as part of a sustained commitment to lifelong learning that will be shaped in part by creativity, empathy, and critical thinking.
