How do I join the Ranger Band Family?

The Deerpark Ranger Band wants YOU to be in Band!  We would like for any interested 5th grader to join the Deerpark Band program for the 2024-2025 school year.  The information below should be useful in making decisions about your child's potential involvement in the Ranger Band.

PICK “BAND” ON YOUR CHOICE SHEET AND ATTEND INSTRUMENT CHOICE DAY!  Parents and students must attend the instrument placement where they will have an opportunity to try out on our instruments, choosing one that will fit them best for next year. Interviews are about 15 minutes long and are done on a RSVP-basis

Instrument Choice Day

Saturday, February 24th from 10:00am - 2:00pm

BEGINNER BAND FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Why join Band?

Participation in an instrumental band provides all students with an enriching cultural, social, and educational experience.  A great deal of self-discipline is developed by the mastery of a musical instrument.

What are the requirements to join Band?

Anyone interested in music may join - no experience necessary.

When are band classes held?

Classes are held during the school day.  There is no conflict with academic courses or sports.  If they would like, students will also have the opportunity to stay after school and practice in the band hall most afternoons for extra enrichment and individualized attention.

Can my child be in other activities (sports, theater, choir, orchestra, etc)?

Absolutely!  Most of our Ranger Band students are involved in various on and off-campus organizations and athletic programs.

What instruments do we teach?

Deerpark Middle School offers beginning band classes in flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium/baritone, tuba, and percussion.

Do you have to buy an instrument?

PLEASE WAIT!  Instrument-specific supply lists and information regarding very affordable rent-to-own programs from local music stores in the area will be available at our "Beginner Band Parent Meeting."  Our largest and most expensive instruments (Oboe, Bassoon, French Horn, Baritone, and Tuba) are provided by the school.  Due to our limited inventory, however, we will NOT be able to guarantee students any other instruments.  NO STUDENT WILL BE DENIED PARTICIPATION IN OUR PROGRAM FOR FINANCIAL REASONS.

Will my child perform in concerts as a Beginning Band student?

Yes!  Beginner Band students are required to perform two concerts during the school year.  There will be 2-3 rehearsals before each concert.  Additionally, our Beginner Band students will have the opportunity to perform as soloists (and in smaller, "chamber" groups) at our annual solo and ensemble contest.

What are private lessons? (Click here to view our private lesson page.)

Private lessons are individual teaching sessions provided to your child by a professional musician who specializes in your child’s instrument.  The private lesson staff is made up of degreed music educators that are hand-picked by the band staff at DMS and the Director of Fine Arts for RRISD.

**All students are qualified to receive private lessons**

Why should my child take private lessons?

Each private teacher will design an instructional sequence and enrichment program tailored to your child’s individual needs that often goes beyond the scope of material covered in the regular band classes.  Students who take private lessons frequently progress at faster rates than their peers (who are not involved in private lessons).
