Coach Rice has been teaching and coaching since 1978. He was born in Vero Beach, Florida and attended schools in the Indian River County School District and graduated from Vero Beach Senior High School in 1973. He received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education degree from the University of Florida in 1978. In 1988, he received a Master of Arts in Physical Education degree from Sam Houston State University.

Memorable experiences in his formative years include earning the rank of Eagle Scout and attending the 1973 and 1977 National Scout Jamborees. At the University of Florida, Coach Rice was a member of the reactivating pledge class of Tau Chapter of the Alpha Phi Omega - National Service Fraternity and holds Life Membership status. Coach Rice also participated in the Gator Bands (marching, concert and jazz) and is a member of Phi Mu Alpha - Sinfonia (a professional music honorary fraternity). He is a member of the University of Florida Gator Band Alumni Association - and still plays the trombone.

After graduating from the University of Florida, Coach Rice moved to Houston, Texas and began his teaching and coaching career. He taught physical education, athletics, science, and coached football at Teague Middle School in the Aldine Independent School District for the 1978-79 school year. He moved to the Klein Independent School District (also in the Houston area) and taught physical education, athletics and science at Wunderlich Intermediate School. His coaching duties included football, track and field, and swimming. Coach's tenure in the Klein I.S.D. was from 1979-96. Coach Rice moved to the Austin area in 1996 and is a member of the faculty at Canyon Vista Middle School. His classroom responsibilities have included wellness education, lifetime fitness, outdoor sports and recreation, sport fitness education and athletics classes. He coaches football, basketball, track and field, and teaches in the physical education department.

Coach Rice's interests outside of teaching and coaching include traveling with his wife (Jeri), photography, snorkeling, hiking and backpacking, running and collecting records (jazz rock, horn bands especially). Coach Rice is an active member of the Lone Star Gator Club (part of the University of Florida Alumni Association).
