Lady Mustang Athletic Practices and Policies

Vision:
To provide a positive sport experience for our lady
athletes through:

    *teamwork
    *discipline
    *responsibility
    *competition
    *fitness

We will emphasize growth within a team.

Expectations:
Our lady athletes will represent Canyon Vista Middle School both on and off
the court. Lady Mustangs will be accountable for their behavior at all times-
classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, athletic events, and school socials.
Unacceptable behavior ( discipline referrals), abuse of alcohol, drugs and/or
tobacco will not be tolerated and could be cause for removal from our
athletic program.

Grades: Will be based on the following catergories:
Preparation/Responsibility
Attitude/Effort/Participation
Fitness

UIL Requirements-
70 or higher in each class at the end of the six weeks for eligibility, 70
or lower may practice but not compete for a three week period, and then must
pass all classes on progress report.

Any athlete who can not maintain the criteria for participation set forth by
UIL will be given a schedule change at semester if ineligible for two
consecutive six week grading periods.

Equipment:
Each Lady Mustang is issued a locker and a combination lock. The athlete is
responsible for her own belongings. Neither CVMS nor the Lady Mustang
Coaching staff will be held accountable for items.

Try Outs:
Volleyball and Basketball will have tryouts for at least 3 days. Coaches
will observe the girls on fundamentals, work ethic, and coachability.
Team Lists will be posted following try outs on the last day. Volleyball
will carry 25 girls and Basketball will carry 25 girls with the remaining
girls being placed into off season to continue to work on speed, strength
and agilities. Track is open to all girls as long as times and distances
qualify.

Uniforms:
Workout clothing can be purchased at Canyon Vista Middle School for $20.00.
Shorts are Navy blue and the t-shirts are red/gray.
Shorts may not be rolled. Short length will meet
dress code requirements. Shoes should fit the sport in season.

Uniforms will be issued to the girls who compete in each particular sport.
Athletes will be responsible for washing uniforms inside out and hanging
dry. Sweats can be dried on low heat setting.

Athletes must pay for any damaged or lost locks, uniforms, or sweats.

Practice:
Lady Mustangs must be on the court at the time practice has been scheduled
or five minutes after the tardy bell. The athlete must be fully dressed in
Lady Mustang attire upon entering the gym. At the beginning of
practice/class, shirts must be tucked in, hair pulled away from face and all
jewelry removed. Hair shoulder length or longer must be pulled back.

Notes will not be accepted for menstrual cramps. Parents must use discretion
when writing notes to excuse athletes for illness. Unless they are in
critical condition, an athlete will participate that day. If an athlete has
to be out for more than 3 days, the note must come from a doctor. If
excessive doctor’s notes are turned in, the athlete will be requested to
seek new physical. This practice is in the best interest of the athlete.

If on a team:
It is imperative to contact your coach if you’re sick or have a specific
reason for missing practice. Call the Athletic office at 464-8199 to leave a
message. Athletes absent on day before game will be the coaches’ discretion
whether the athlete will play in game.

Tutorials, when all possible, should be arranged before or after school
opposite of your practice time. Athletes should not be missing practice to
serve teacher or administrative detention.
JUST KEEP IN MIND MISSED PRACTICES AFFECT PLAYING TIME. NO PRACTICE, NO PLAY!

Game Days:
Lady Mustangs will be in attendance for both “A” and “B” games to help build
team spirit. An athlete should not miss a game, tournament, or meet except
for emergency situations. Please contact coach should a problem
arise.

Transportation:
All athletes will ride to and from the away games on the bus. Athletes may
be signed out only to their parent in an emergency situation.

Paperwork:
All athletes are required to have a physical, emergency cards and RRISD
participation release on file prior to participation (including try-outs) of
any sports.

Athletics is a Privilege!!

ELIGIBILITY “No pass, no play”
Each athlete must maintain a 70 average or above in ALL subjects. Upon failure of ANY subject, the athlete will NOT be allowed to compete in any contest until the next grade-reporting period (3 weeks). At that time, the athlete must be passing ALL subjects to regain their eligibility. Subsequent failures may result in removal from athletics.

Team selection is not necessarily permanent. Throughout the season players may be promoted, demoted, or removed from a team based on their performance, grades, and/or behavior. As coaches, we want as many participants as possible. Our primary objective is to build the skills that will be required to compete at the high school level.

There is no guaranteed playing time in middle or high school athletics.
Every effort will be made to be as fair as possible. Playing time decisions will be based on practice and game effort, enthusiasm, and attitude. Skill does figure into the equation, but is only one element in the decision of the coaches.

OFF-SEASON
ALL of our programs require RUNNING. This requires that our athletes remain in peak physical shape. ALL ATHLETES WILL MEET THE
REQUIREMENTS OF OUR OFF-SEASON PROGRAM. There are NO exceptions. Medical issues will be addressed on an individual basis.

Each athlete will be issued a locker in which she can store her personal property. However, we suggest that STUDENTS NOT BRING LARGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY OR OTHER VALUABLES (expensive shoes, watches, CD/MP3 players, etc.) to the locker room. This should be left in their school locker or at home. The coaches are not responsible for items missing from lockers. Once again, it is very important that clothing is marked with the athlete’s last name for identification purposes should the property become lost or stolen.

All athletes are required to take the bus to away games. We encourage the athletes to stay at both contests, but if a parent needs to take their child, please have a note 24 hours in advance.
After the team returns to the school from the contest, the parent or
guardian should pick them up promptly. The coach will stay until all
athletes are gone. Athletes should be picked up no later than 15 minutes after arrival. Phones may not be available. Do NOT rely on a phone call to pick up. Please communicate all pickup times in advance. If an athlete is habitually late being picked up, she will NOT be allowed to compete in the next contest.

Students that refuse to comply with a coach’s instructions or that refuse to follow the rules of athletics will be taken out of the athletic class and/or be dismissed from the team. This can occur at any point during the school year.

We look forward to rewarding and successful seasons in all of our sports this year. We hope to see each of you at the games cheering these fine athletes to victory! Parental support is a vital component of a successful program. Please call and discuss any concerns you may have. We also appreciate the positive calls and e-mails! We are here to promote Westwood High School athletic programs and we want to make this year an enjoyable experience for each of our athletes. Thank you.

At all Canyon Vista athletic events, players and spectators are expected to model the qualities of positive sportsmanship. These expectations include the following:

- Cheer for the players with positive encouragement and comments.
- Allow officials to call the games as they see it. Negative comments directed toward officials are inappropriate and may cause your team to receive a technical foul or cause you to be removed from school grounds.
- Allow the coaches to coach the students. Comments from the bleachers often frustrate and embarrass players on the court or field. Please save your coaching comments until the event has ended.

Individuals who do not model positive sportsmanship will be reminded of our expectations. Individuals who continue to fail to meet our expectations will be asked to leave the event.

Working together, we can set an example for others to follow.
