A bit about myself.....

Dear Live Oak Families,

Welcome to the start of an exciting new year at Live Oak Elementary school. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for sharing your scholar with me. I cherish the opportunity to work with you and your child.

I would like to tell you a bit about myself. I am happy to say I am starting my 27th year in education and my 8h with Round Rock I.S.D. My previous 18 years were spent up the road with Killeen I.S.D. I graduated from Texas Tech University in 1990 with a B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies, Teacher of Young Children. I completed my Master of Education Degree from Texas Wesleyan University in 1998. I am all but dissertation in my pursuit of my Ed.D. from Walden University.

I have been married 21 years and have 2 children. My husband, Salvador, is a tennis teaching professional and works for Walmart. I have a daughter, Magdalena who is 19 and a son, Ayrton who is 14. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats. I enjoy crosstiching, scrapbooking, stamping, tennis, golf and cooking.

Teaching is a huge responsibility and I am committed to it! I have a mission that goes along with this responsibility. My mission is to help all students to gain the tools they will need to become productive, accepting, respectful and responsible citizens of the future. I feel my job is not only to guide students through the TEKS, as stated by Texas law; but also, to teach life skills. Your child will receive my respect and compassion and we will, with you and your child’s help reach the goals we set.

I look forward to a super year full of wonderful new learning experiences for all of us! Your child is the key to our bright future. Your help and caring will give us the support we need to carry us through to a fruitful year!

With Live Oak Pride, Mrs. Hignojos

Helpful Hints for a Successful Second Grade Year

Families

This is going to be a great year! We are so excited to be working and learning with your child! We love teaching 2nd grade, and we are proud to be a part of the Live Oak family! We wanted to provide you with some basic information to help answer any questions that you might have at this time. We are available during our conference time (8:00-8:50) and after class. Second grade is such an important year where we will be learning many new things, and it is vital for your child to be ready to go each day. Please help your child to get to bed early every night in order for them to be rested and ready to go the next day in the classroom. Also, please feed your child breakfast in the mornings or send them to the cafeteria to get breakfast (7:15-7:30am) so that their tummies are full and they can focus on learning rather than being hungry. We will be having a snack every morning, so please send something healthy and nutritious with your child each day. Please have your child here on time. Announcements are at 7:35, and we begin instruction immediately. A few minutes before 7:40 will allow your child to be organized (do the lunch count, etc.) and settled to begin a good day. Dismissal is at 2:45. Students may not return to the classroom once the bell rings without a teacher’s permission. All teachers have high standards for learning and believe behavior should not interfere with the student’s (or other students) success. We provide good character trait instruction, such as manners, respect for yourself and others, and responsibility. We expect our students to always do their best, take pride in themselves and their work, be well-mannered, and be kind and courteous to others. We are committed to giving your child a safe and nurturing environment that is conducive to the highest learning each and every day. Together, we believe that we will be able to give your child the tools he/she needs to grow and be successful in second grade and the future! We welcome your questions, your help, your concerns, and most of all – your amazing child!! Thank you for your support. We are looking forward to a wonderful year together! Please take the time to look over the 2nd grade wiki as well as your teacher’s website. There, you’ll find more useful information as well as updates from your child’s teacher and different games your child can play related to what they are learning in class. Please refer back to this website throughout the year for updates and requests from your child’s teacher. We look forward to a great successful year and getting to knowing you and your child!

Sincerely, 2 nd grade teachers

Snack Time

A time is provided during the day for your child to eat a healthy snack. You may want to send an easy to eat snack since we will be eating our snack outside at recess. Appropriate snacks are listed below. It is very important that you do not send a snack containing any peanut product because of peanut allergies.  Pretzels  Dry cereal  Popped popcorn  Dried fruit  Breakfast Bars  Crackers

Second Grade Math

Math homework will come home on Mondays and is due on Fridays.

Please follow the Quality Work Expectations on your homework.

Below is an example of what quality work looks like.

Not sure what to do? Please watch these videos explaining the expectations and procedures for completing the homework.

Homework Sample 3

Regrouping with addition

Parents,

Here are 2 instructional videos showing you how we are teaching with regrouping using the Algebraic method.

This is a different way than we learned it in school, but this will teach them more about how to dissect numbers and do mental math.

Thanks for watching!

Regrouping with subtraction

Parents-

We teach regrouping with subtraction a little differently than how we learned it in school.

The way we teach it now goes back to the visual representation of the value of each number using tens and ones.

Please click on the link to the video we have made to explain the way we teach it now.
