From the Ground Up is a shared practice and learning space for Black communities to reimagine and remake the environments and systems that shape our futures, while transforming our relationship to the power that currently shapes them without us
Through community-rooted learning and experimentation, it deepens knowledge, relationships and collective power, so our communities can act on the decisions that affect them and lead and build what's missing, ourselves.
Our Story
From the Ground Up was created in response to the serious health impacts of poor air quality in Lambeth and Southwark. Research from Impact on Urban Health found that Black African and Caribbean communities are disproportionately affected, as they are more likely to live and work in highly polluted areas. Despite these impacts, Black communities have historically been underrepresented in air pollution and environmental decision-making.
This programme was developed to work with individuals in the communities most affected by these issues, to create, test, and build solutions. Over the past three years, we've worked with Black leaders in South London to deliver:
In-person retreats, taking cohorts away into nature to practice rest, reconnection, embodied and creative practices
Online discussions and learning circles connecting lived experience to topics such as: environmental justice, policy, existing environmental thinkers, movements and initiatives
Self-directed reflective practice for leaders
A community exhibition that brought together cohorts, community members, representatives from local councils and infrastructure organisations, to showcase the programme
Who is the programme for?
The programme is centred around community leaders: people who are active in leading grassroots initiatives, movements, activities or organisations who don’t currently see themselves and their work as connected to environmental issues.
Leaders do not have to be an organisational director or hold a leadership title. We consider leaders to be people who are embedded within a relational community (not necessarily geographic), they hold trust, sustain networks, and enable others to shape their own direction.
What the programme offers leaders
Time and space to pause, reflect and make sense
Language and framing to name what you already do as ecological
New and deeper relationships with other leaders in the area
Recognition of your present leadership as it already is as ecological practice
A route towards change and action on your community’s own terms.
This programme takes different forms depending on your time and interests. Explore Everyday Ecologies to find the current ways to take part.
Futures where Black communities live well within ecologies that are just, healthy and shaped by collective power
To build and sustain networks of Black leadership who can collectively respond to and reshape ecological conditions with their communities.
From the Ground Up leaves community leaders with a fresh way of seeing their work, deeper relationships, language to carry into the rooms that matter, and simple tools to use again with their own people.
“[I have] a different consciousness around the environment—not just environmental issues, but how everything is connected, […] taking responsibility as a person”

“Since the retreat, I have signed up our organisation to the Better Futures Green Business Programme and aim to develop our environmental policy for our business whilst aiming to be a net-zero business.“
