Romulus Early College
Overview
Romulus Early College serves motivated high school students. It is open to all students in Wayne County that enroll in Romulus High School. Students apply in the 10th grade and, if selected, begin the summer before 11th grade.
Structure
In order to motivate and support students taking on the rigors of both high school and college coursework, Romulus Early College students are required to attend a Seminar the first two years of the program at Romulus High School. Students also benefit from the monitoring and guidance of Dr. Nelson, Early College Coordinator, and assistance from both high school counselors and a specialized college advisor at Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD).
Students accepted into Romulus Early College agree to an additional year of high school (Bonus year 13). During the first year (grade 11), students attend three classes at Romulus High School and take classes at Wayne County Community College. Students attend their high school for typically two hours during the second year (grade 12) and spend the third year (grade 13) completely on Wayne County Community College campus besides one class at RHS.
The typical student enrolls in 14 hours of college credit during grade 11, 3 or 4 credits in the summer between 11th and 12th grade, 19 credit hours during grade 12, and 24 credit hours during grade 13. At this time, students may earn their Associate's of Science or Arts. Students will not receive their high school diploma until the end of their fifth bonus year of high school, although they will walk in the graduation ceremony their actual senior (12th grade) year.
Support
Students admitted to Romulus Early College are required to attend a weeklong orientation program during the summer between grades 10 and 11. This program is designed to help students acclimate to the rigors of the early college program.
During the first two years of the program, students are required to attend Seminar at RHS where they are engaged in a college readiness and life management skills curriculum. Topics include responsibility, attendance, preparation, follow through, communication, and stress management. This is also a time students may work on their college assignments and spend time in their study groups.
Students have access to counselors at their high school and at WCCCD. Supplemental services such as tutoring, which are available to all WCCCD students, are also available to Romulus Early College student.
